I have not tried to, but can I pay for an apothecary and put him in any squad or is he limited to a command squad only?

If he has the Independant Character rule, and another rule allowing him to leave the squad then yes. If not...

It just says that he comes with a command squad. I would ask my opponent first, but I think its fair to pay for him as all he does is cast fnp on a squad, can be instant death 1 wound t4 model at 130pt(because of his loadout i gave him). Personally as an oppenent would you agree with that?
also he would take up an HQ slot.

If he comes with the command squad, and he does not have the IC rule, he has to stay with the command squad. and I would not agree to you making up a new HQ unit to use in a game, unless I can make one up as well.

Okay I see your point and thank you. But thats a very negative view on what I was asking. Im not making up an HQ choice, Im simply asking if I can put an extremly killable model in an HQ slot. But i guess not so thank you for that.

Nope, these days they are stuck in the Command Squad.
There was a Trait in the 4th edition Marine codex that allowed you to upgrade squad Sergeants to Apothecaries... That was fun, if a little expensive

I've actually been considering dusting off the 4th ed codex for some games at home... It lacks some of the more recent toys, but had some awesome stuff in there through the customisation allowed by the Trait system.

How so? I simply stated it was against the rules.
Im not making up an HQ choice,
Yes you are, because an apothecary does not exist as a current HQ choice.
Im simply asking if I can put an extremly killable model in an HQ slot. But i guess not so thank you for that.
By the rules you can not, but in a friendly game I would let you do so but only if I got to make up an HQ unit of my own.

Same. I'd let you do it in a friendly game if you let me just take an eldar jetbike on my archon.

An apothecary is just as able to separate from the command squad as a plasma gunner would be from a tactical squad.

So basically what Im saying, in a friendly game, I pay for the whole command squad. 115 points, plus what I put on my apothecary a super weak model whos soul purpose is fnp. I paid for 4 other marines but only took one. He is in the HQ section, just not an IC. I think in a friendly game it would be okay to bring him as an HQ because he can die super fast(lascannon, meltas, most tanks, MC, etc)

And he can die just as fast with precision shots.
If you want Apothecaries in regular units, maybe Blood Angels is a better army?

Seer councils are also in the HQ section and are made up entirely of warlocks. They're also all considered characters. By the same logic, I could split up my seer council and put warlocks in aspect warrior squads, letting my banshees hit with their power swords against MEQ on a 3+ instead of a 4+, at initiative 6. Or give my pathfinders a 3+ cover save while standing in open ground. Technically both, since I can get 10 of those warlocks for around 300 points, I could put them in every squad to improve basically every aspect of my army.
The problem is, friendly game or no, where do you draw the line? Typically, I do so at the rules. I might make a specific exception to play a game or so, but I prefer to not be in the habit of doing something that isn't allowed. If I got accustomed to using my archon on an eldar jetbike, it'd be a tough cookie to eat when I wasn't allowed to do it any more.

Blood angels bring the priests right? Thats an apothecary equivelant but they are elites if im not mistaken. I could bring them as allies and take a priest in one of my squads. Hey not a bad idea! Thanks falcon!

But remember that allied units, even battle brothers, cannot embark on a transport together.

Yeah I see your point on that and Its perfectly fine, Im not a rule breaker but Its all in fun. At tournaments I wouldnt try to do what Im asking. Im fairly new to 40k(I started back in october) And Im pretty chill with the rules, but its all about the fun sometimes. to a certain extent, like you said where do I draw line. Being as Ive never tried and just wanted to gain some personal opinions by you all now makes me hesitant to ask, if not at all, if I could do such as bring an apothecary as a solo HQ. But id just save the trouble and bring BA allies instead. Automatically Appended Next Post: I know that I just looked it up!

Yeah, I think this is a good idea. The allies rules are definitely cool, and I plan on making some use of them myself. Luckily, GW saw fit to give DE at least ONE army that they could ally with without massive penalties.

Sadly, BA allies won't fix your problems if you were planning on attaching the Priest to one of your normal SM squads. According to the FAQ his blood chalice will only affect other units from the BA codex. If you get the chance to look through the Badab Wars IAs there is an HQ choice that will allow you to exchange TAC squad sgts for Apothecaries. (Darog already mentioned this, just wanted to re-emphasize) Good luck!

There was also a WD chapter approved article in 3rd edition which allowed an Apothecary orTechmarines to be detached from HQ and attached to another squad.
Right now there's no legal way to give apothecaries to other squads on a regular codex: SM army, but there are two options:
1. Make up a house rule (like you've suggested) and agree with your regular opponent what the custom rule is. It would probably be fair to allow them to also do something nonstandard in return. We have another subforum called Proposed Rules specifically for discussion of ideas like this.
2. Use one of a few different possible current rules which allow you to do something similar. There are a few options I'm aware of:
a) Use the Blood Angels codex for your army. They get most of the same options as Space Marines anyway (and you can Ally in codex: SM for others), and they give you Sanguinary Priests to act as super-apothecaries.
b) Use the rules for Salamanders and their apothecary IC from Index Astartes.
c) Use the Red Scorpions chapter rules from Index Astartes.
