Hey everyone,

Got into a discussion with one of my friends the other day about using Tau allies with my CSM force. I'm using CSM as the primary detachment and Tau as the Allied Detachment.

The question I have is how do Army Specific special rules work for allied detachments? I've looked through the rulebook multiple times and can't find a clear answer anywhere. Would I be allowed to use the "Support Fire" army rule from the Tau codex if one of the units from my CSM force was charged (Of course they would have to be within 6 inches for the rule anyway) or would this not work because the way AOC are listed as the models treat each other as enemies. The other thing I find interesting is would I be able to use markerlights to increase the BS of units from my CSM force as that is more of a wargear special rule not just an army specific special rule.

I'm probly just hoping for some cheap nonsense but to me I should be able to do both of those without breaking any rules but since I can't find an answer on either this forum or the rulebooks or the FAQ from GW I figured I should ask before getting into an argument with anyone about it.

Nevermind re-read the markerlight section in the Tau book. "Units from Codex- Tau Empire can choose...." That answers that part. Still unsure about the supporting fire though

It depends on the wording. For example, Markerlights specify that only Tau Empire units can expend them. Doom (Eldar Farseer psychic power) only requires the enemy unit to be hit, so any allied unit shooting at that enemy unit benefits. If it says friendly unit it usually must be either a unit from the codex in question or a battle brother.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I believe the wording is "friendly units" in regard to Support Fire.
Unfortunately your allies are treated as Enemy units, not Friendly units (see Allies rule).

Grendel is correct, Supporting Fire specifies friendly units, meaning only Battle Brothers or Allies of Convenience would be eligible to use it as far as allies are concerned.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

Allies of Convenience are not friendly units. P. 112

Sorry, read CSM as C:SM. I ever mention I hate acronyms?

In any event, if the army allying with the Tau are Allies of Convenience or Desperate Allies, then you cannot fire in support of them. If they are Battle Brothers, then you totally can. Which is freaking awesome! I never realized that before.

Woops, pretty big mental blank on that one.

Thanks for correcting it.

Thanks guys. After reading it a few more times it makes sense that way.

It is pretty cool that Supporting Fire will work with Eldar or Codex; Space Marines allies, since they're Battle Brothers with Tau.

Neat.
