Subject: Supporting fire is fun and other ramblings about Tau.

I just wanted to say, after my first game of new tau (which is in no way indicative of other future games) against dark eldar that I am really liking supporting fire. I somehow accidentally had all my units set up juuust right to completely wipe out a Baron Beast Pack on the charge (Baron, 3 masters, 5 birds, the big beast guy, and a few chimeras). This was, of course, including Smart missiles from broadsides (TL and counterfire defense systems makes it all better) a Riptide with nova charged burst cannon and SMS, 2 10 man FW squads with storm of fire, and DJ Longstrike and his SMS missiles. Granted this was a perfect storm of fire, but it was a firm example of just how a well managed (or in my case, accidentally managed) fire line can really help shore up your units. I found that my units that were out in the open tended to get eaten up but after that my opponent really had to choose how he was going to assault me instead of just running in and tying up my ethereal to get that extra VP.
I am quite pleased on how this rule can impact my deployments and how it can really affect how i position my squads, i think i will try to keep them in larger, longer formations so i can keep as many units as i can within supporting fire range.
Ive also learned that SMS are incredible, and i have no reason not to take them over anything else. Especially with that 30" range and the fact i do not need line of sight and it ignores cover. Granted that will not aid me in the deluge of Marine armies, but it definitely adds a level of flexibility when trying to remain out of LOS of big guns and still being able to make an impact whilst moving your squads forward.
In the end i almost lost the game because he wiped my ethereal, and that extra VP can really hurt. Additionally as DE he was able to quickly redeploy his few remaining units to capture objectives with raiders (and i instantly regret not taking a devilfish or 2 to let me try the same)
Please let me what kind of results supporting fire has given you, and how you other armies plan to deal with it!

I was playing vs a strictly assault Daemon/CSM list. My Kroot were strung out so that all my units could support fire. I put close to 60 wounds on a large brick of Fleshhounds, who somehow survived but were neutered enough to not make an impact. Quite hilarious and quite awesome at the same time.

Ive never thought about kroot being a sacrificial shield like that, it works out better since its a 20+man unit!

Yeah, I think it is one of the awesome tactics they can take part in. It forces an assault army to shoot them so that they dont have to charge them and then get supporting fire OW'd into oblivion.

I didn't see Raingun/Ion Cannon for DJ Longstrike. Unline other Hammerhead's overwatch, Longstrike can use his primary weapons for overwatching as well. With markerlight support, he can really bring the pain to someone.

Yeah, rail cannon got cover saved, but his SMS really worked well on barons shroud. I was using railcannons for DE so i could insta-pen his raiders

So far I've been nothing but stoked with the changes to my Tau! I've been reluctant to say so on Dakka due to the overwhelming negativity that seems to be directed towards them. Interesting side note, which I just discovered less than five minutes ago, Supporting Fire lets you shoot enemies who are charging your allies, provided the allies are Battle Brothers. Since I run Space Marines, I'm already planning to utilize this.
