Hey, which do you think is better? Right now I'm going with the Trygon because if upgraded to a Prime it has a decent shooting attack. Also, it attacks at AP2 in CC with Strength 6. What are your thoughts about which is more effective in CC?

In my testing, I preferred Ymgarals for their flexibility and ability to effect my opponent's deployment. Well-placed Ymagarals can really do some damage, especially to armored opponents which Nids can struggle with. The Trygon is nice but earliest he will make an impact is usually turn 3.

Why not give your opinion in both cases?

well price for price you can get about 9 of the genes. That's 18 attacks at i6 (27 on the charge) at ws6 s4 with rending. That's striking before everything but elder (which they mostly land on par with) and will on average, hit 15 times and wound 7-8 times (with 2 rends). Having a 4+ save they will only, on average, save half the return wounds and are only t4.
One trygon gets 6 attacks (7 on charge) at i4 with ws 5 and s6. He will attack with most MEQ's and after some MEQ's and CC-based things (lookin at you elder) but he has 6 wounds so he should survive with t6. He will, on average, get 4 hits and 3 wounds against a marine squad. He also has a 3+ save making him more likely to survive against return attacks.
Point for point my money is on the genes. More attacks at a higher initiative step is always a good deal, plus you get the extra wounds.
In general, trygons are tougher, stronger, better save and have an edge on cool factor. Genes have more wounds, attacks, higher leadership and strike much faster so in my opinion in a close-combat only situation I would rather have the genes.

Trygon will kill more than 3 marines, you can't forget he has re-rolls to hit ( 2 sets of scything talons) and for mere 10 points he get rerolls to wound against marines and he also get extra attack from hammer of wrath on charge. On charge he will get 5.25 hits and about 5 dead marines, on average. He is also excellent fire magnet that can draw fire from other MCs and is scoring unit in Big Guns Never Tire.

I prefer Ymgarls if you can spare the Elite slot. Trygons die to shooting, and take a lot more of it than Ymgarls. Ymgarls also mess with deployment and only take one overwatch before they hit and kill things.

i prefer Ymgarls, i agree with the dude above. Its lke a chess game with these guys and your opponents deployment. They can really wreck some havoc.

Both are effective units and it really depends on your army list which is better to take, but in a vacuum I'd give Ymgarls the edge thanks to higher number of attacks and the Dormant rule.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Ymgarl may be better choice if they occupied the same slot, however i usually fill up the elite slot with hive guard or zoanthropes, making ymgarl a tough choice to make. So in most cases i choose to take a trygon.
