Hello, all. Well, I bought the kit for my Blood Angel army, thinking I would use it to carry up a Terminator Assault Squad and an HQ unit of some type into close-combat range and then spring dramatically out the doors, slashing and bashing everything to bits! I even bought Forge World doors for it, and was super excited, having spent a million hours painting up my Close combat Termies. Then, of course, I discovered that Mephiston is not an Independent Character and so can't join units, and that the BA are not as good at CC as they used to be. In any case, I am now thinking that I should have just bought the regular Land Raider with LCs, but too late now...

Anyway, help me salvage my purchase, tactically speaking.

I think I could STILL use it to transport a CC squad, though perhaps with a Librarian now? Biomancy powers? Or I have a converted Terminator captain, who could lead the squad if I had a bigger game and a second HQ. Or just another CC Termie?

Furthermore, which weapons loadout? Initially I thought that I would take the Flamestorm cannons because of their high Str and AP. However, I am worried now about my ability to get them into range--they are mostly anti-infantry weapons anyway, right? The assault cannon is solid, with lots of shots and Rending, and I could throw a MM on the roof to add some anti-tank power to the Land Raider in general. But if I can't get it into range effectively, would the Hurricane sponsons do just as well? It's a lot of shots and, although it wouldn't help against tanks, making enemy models pass a lot of saves can be effective too.

I would welcome any thoughts or advice before I finish assembling the kit and start painting it up. It will look cool, I am sure, but I am just wondering if it has any more tactical value with one of these configurations than the other.

I'm sure someone will post that you should use magnets so that you can switch between weapon setups.

So in before someones says to use magnets I guess...

To be honest I havn't done anything much in 40K since 6th edition so I'm no longer sure about landraiders.

However with that said a death company squad in a lrc should still be able to unleash some cc goodness no?

A terminator deathstar unit in a landraider is almost a cliche by now, they can do some good things. The key is to see the LR as a means to get your termies (or death company if that's what you're into) into close combat as soon as possible. Move 12', flat out 6' and you've jammed a tough, nasty CC unit in turn 2 assault range of your opponent's army. If you get to shoot the tank's weapons on turn 2, it's just icing on the cake. The choice you have to make then is 8 termies and rapid-firing hurricane bolters vs. 6 termies and flamestorm cannons. Those flamers evaporate MEQ, but having 2 extra termies can help alot too.

The issue is that every anti-tank weapon in your opponent's list will be shooting at that LR. Land Raiders are tough, but they will still die, possibly before they get to shoot. And don't forget about terrain either. If you want to do it, I'd say go for it, just make sure you either have 1) units that can take advantage of the distraction to blow some chunks out of the enemy or 2) another unit that will draw fire away from the LR (or a couple units).

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

I like the crusader better just because they don't have to get within melta range to fire their weapons.

Personally, I prefer the Crusader as well, although I play Vanilla Marines, so there might be some differences there.

Any kind of flame weapon on any tank is dangerous to employ now. This is why I love my TL HF on discounted BA razorbacks. They are disposable at that price point. And fast.

As for adding an IC to the mix, Brother Corbulo is a pretty great option. He can soak up a ton of wounds for the unit, and if something S8 or higher comes his way, LoS it to a Stormshield Terminator. It's just full of win...

Use the redeemer it has ap3 flamers and still has the assault cannon I use it in my space marine army all the time and it can kill lots of stuff

as well as the hurricane bolters aren't that effective yes they are twin linked but I play orks and they have almost no effect ever

Yes the carrying cappasity is lower but you can still have a full 5 hammernators with libby so there is no complaining except from your opponent who just watches their units die and die again

if you being shot up first is a problem hold it in reserve and deepstrike it because Blood Angels can I think or if you need it on the board get 2 and dont worry about using up all your heavy support slots in big games it a dedicated transport

I can honestly say that a flame storm on a redeemer has never killed a single one of my models. I have always meltaed them before they get the chance. Now, the terminators inside have killed plenty. So why not bring the Crusader and get more?

Thanks to all of you--I appreciate the advice. I am kind-of leaning towards the Crusader with a couple of extra Storm-Shielded Termies inside in case the LR does get blasted to bits. That makes it a pretty expensive delivery device, but in that respect, it is only logical to make the cargo as destructive as possible (which having a couple of extra guys accomplishes.)

As for Brother Corbulo, thanks for that advice also--FNP has not worked well for me recently playing DE, but that's because they were Dark Lance-ing everything, so getting instant death. So, having him along might help my unit endure a little longer.

Thanks to all!

Is there really a thing (aside from other Terminators of course) which 8 Terminators can kill but 6 cannot? We're talking about 4 attacks after all, so real tarpits will still tarpit you and you even kill more things in the first round of combat which is not a good thing even for Termis. So I gladly give up the transport capacity for the far superior guns.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

The godhammer config might be the best in 6th edition. But that wasn't mentioned. I really don't like the Redeemer at all.

You do realise deep striking a land raider is almost certain to have a mishap right? Its one of the largest things in 40k, plus scatter distance...

Hey, thanks a lot for this observation! I actually just queried this in the "Space wolves as BA allies" post, as I've never tried to Deep strike in a Land Raider and have read it here that one should never do it. Now I am getting a better idea of why that is--that would be a LOT of points to lose in a mishap.

Maybe if you didn't play on tables with a lot of terrain? Still...yeah, thanks Mat Ward.

Don't you get Locators on normal Scouts too? Just get a minimum squad of Snipers, infiltrate them and pull of a second turn Land Raider drop.

Or add 2 locator beacons to the drop pod(s) you'll have arriving turn 1. It's a small upgrade to something that's probably already in your list, and if you use 2, you'll have a large amount of coverage as to where you can place the LR. The true issue with deep striking a land raider is AT BEST it comes in turn 2, so it's expensive contents are assaulting turn 3. It's probably better for the Deep Striking LR Redeemer to hold a small scoring unit, that way it's protecting something that'll be used for late game objective grabbing while it rolls around the backfield flaming units and causing problems.

Having said all that, I agree with everyone else... conventional wisdom says that starting it on the board and racing it forward so it's contents are almost guaranteed a turn 2 assault is the way to go.

I think the crusader flat out wins against the redeemer. Those Str:6 Ap3 cannons look good on paper, but on the table top they're pretty useless. Especially as they can never attack the same target.
You've also more than likely got plenty of AP2 in the LR ready to assault, so it's not like you even need that ap3 template.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

I use the crusader to torrent opposition teqs if I can. If I can kill one or two, it swings the battle in my favor. Torrent fire is just useful in general.

I've heard good things about both of them. AV14 and a terminator payload seems like a win win to me. I'd go with the flame storm cannons but I'd be running it with Grey Knights.

And unfortunately I'd have to stick with the TLLC and Heavy Bolter for my CSM.

Now it's just a matter of avoiding that ridiculous price tag/finding a cheap LR that doesn't look like it was dropped down a flight of concrete stairs into a can of paint.

Two TL LC's gives a surprisingly good chance to drop a flyer; nothing I would *depend* upon, but still there...

Just general utility. An extra shot at a vindicator. An extra wound on a tervigon. From 48" out, a the while delivering terminator death ever closer. If you don't want to shoot, and just go flat out, that's cool too. They are all the same price.

I regularly run a Godhammer pattern LR in my DA army, The 2 TLLC really helps my anti-tank-I do take an AP as well, but the two extra S9 AP2 shots does wonders vs everything with an AV or a MC.

Thanks for the Deep Strike advice--yes, I could take Scouts with a locator beacon. They are a scoring unit too, so I could defend them and the objective they are guarding in this manner, too, potentially. In that case, dropping a LR right down in front of a bunch of dudes thinking they were just about to slaughter my scouts and steal the objective might be a justification for keeping the LR in reserve until turn 2 or 3.

Drop pods also sound solid--I need to get some. The double coverage is especially good, so thanks a ton for that idea, Voidwraith.

And, yes, I feel the same as all of you about the TLLCs on the regular LRs. Aah. GW does keep you addicted, that's for sure.

Anyway, after getting like 1 response to this post in the first couple of days, I am totally psyched at the responses! So thanks a ton!

No problem! Definitely scouts with LB though. Take a 10 man squad with snipers and a heavy weapon and let them pick stuff off, then when you need it most, have a landraider plummet out of the sky within 6" of it-priceless.
