I've just picked up one of these pretty cheaply 2nd-hand, and I'm wondering if there are some Apocalypse-style rules that better suit the larger model. Something that treats the Avatar as a proper Gargantuan Creature with appropriate stats for big games. I'm sure I've seen them somewhere before, but it's possible that I just imagined them (or they were just player-made rules).

Anyone know which expansion / IA book the rules might be in?

None that I have seen, and I have every IA book that has been produced bar volumes 5 and 11

There is a formation for apocalypse called the court of the young king, but that doesnt give you much

It is in the main Codex. And as long as the Trygon, Dreadknight and Riptide are just monstrous, the Avatar shouldn't be gargantuan.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

Just wait for an update to the codex, and no the Avatar doesn't deserve to be a Gargantuan Creature. Thats for things like Biotitans, Squiggoths, and Angron the Daemon Primarch.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

The Trygon, Dreadknight and Riptide are monstrous so GW have a popular large plastic kit to sell with their new codexes. Trygons used to be Gargantuan and never changed in size.

Forge World do larger Greater Daemon sculpts and wrote rules for Gargantuan 'Daemon Lords' that make them more suited for Apoc. I thought it was pretty reasonable that they'd have done the same for the Avatar since it's basically a huge daemon too. Oh well...

Ios

It's the old GW Avatar that's tiny, not the other way around.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

The Apocalypse formation you are looking for is called "The Phoenix Court of Khaine" and it is in Apocalypse: Reload.

Essentially it is the Avatar + all 6 Phoenix Lords. The Avatar uses the standard Codex rules for the Avatar, has Eternal Warrior, and it has additional immunity to plasma weapons (in addition to flame and melta), and the range of his inspiring and Wailing Doom abilities increased to 24". Finally it gains additional Attacks equal to the number of Phoenix Lords in 6" of it.

Fluffwise, this is explained that instead of just sacrificing an Aspect Warrior to awaken Khaine, each of the Phoenix Lords sacrifices an Exarch gestalt soul from themselves, granting the Avatar increased power.

Pretty awesome, all told. The FW model rocks. Maybe we'll see a significant buff to the Avatar in the new codex alongside a new model?
