Hi, guys.
I've not played against Necrons too often, only twice and I've nearly been tabled both times (with Dark Angels + Blood Angels)
I'm curious about necron resurrection, as far as I know if his HQ, or whoever, has a resurrection orb on a 4+ any destroyed units come back to life?
What happens if you kill them with weapons that ignore their armour save and they have no cover save? I fired shells from my whirlwind (AP4) and destroyed a bunch and he rolled a few 4+'s and they came back to life, so I'd like some clarification on that? like do you roll to see if they come back to life right away, or at the start of the next turn? also where do you place the models? I was planning to assault him after shooting but he rolled, revived a bunch and placed them behind his existing troops increasing the distance I'd need to charge by about 4" so that put my assault range about 10" instead of 6"

Res orb only affects the model that has it and whatever unit that model is attached to.
Nothing negates RP/EL rolls like in previous editions.
Even in previous editions, it did not work like you think it worked, AP4 would not have negated We'll Be Back, only Ap2 Ap1 and double toughness (on failed saved) providing no res orb was around. But that is pointless information now.

A necron's RP always works, no matter what you do to it. The only way a necron loses it's RP roll is if his unit has been wiped out or flees. A necron with the Ever-Living rule is the exception to this, as he can always attempt to roll, even if the unit he was attached to has been wiped out. An RP/EL roll is usually made on a 5+, unless there is a Resurrection orb in the unit. The roll is then upgraded to a 4+. Note that the orb must be in the unit; otherwise it has no effect.

Reanimation protocol is only 4+ if the Lord/Overlord has a resurrection orb and is in the same unit as that has fallen, otherwise it's a 5+.
RP can always be taken by a fallen Necron model unless the entire unit is wiped out or they are overran by sweeping advance.
When placing the models back from reanimation, they have to be within 3 inches & still in unit coherency (I'm going off the top of my head on this one, codex is not nearby) of where they fell. If they cannot be placed as such, they are lost.

1. Res orb only works on the unit it's in
2. They always get the RP ro unless the entire unit is killed
3. They make the roll at the end of the current phase they are killed
4. They can be placed anywhere within unit coherency of a model that was there before RP roll was made. ( your opponent played it all correctly)

Almost correct. AP1 and AP2 did not stop WBB, but power weapons did.

Unless I remember it wrong weapons that did not allow saves stopped wbb. This included ap1 and 2 weapons but not ap3 as some models would get saves therefore it was not a weapon that did not allow saves.

Nope pg19 of old dex: "A Necron cannot self repair if it was destroyed by a close combat weapon that allows no armor save or any weapon whose strength is twice the toughness of the necron concerned" This always confuses people for some reason. Also, is it me, but were 3rd ed rules a lot better written than the current rules? It probably is...

Reanimation protocols are done each phase. So, once your shooting phase is over, he rolls RP and they can get back up.
Then you decide if you want to assault.
This boils down to a tactical decision. Do you shell them first or just go ahead and assault. There are numerous situations where you wouldn't want to shoot them prior to charging.

ah, ok. Thanks for all this everyone
The guy didn't seem the sort to cheat but when he started moving his models way back I was like "hey! can you do that?!"
Now I hate Necrons even more :p

When in doubt, ask to see the codex. If they are playing correctly (or of they are unwittingly screwing up a rule) they should have no problem showing you the rule in question. If they don't let you look, they are more than likely cheating (and know it as well).

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Oh ya, you're right. Don't have the codex with me but for some reason I remembered it as being similar to FNP from 5th edition. Either way, hardly matters now really.

As I understand it, Necrons can only come back if they were removed as a casualty, ie. suffered a wound and died. Necrons cannot come back if they were removed from play--not as a casualty, but by some other means, like being replaced with a Chaos Spawn or some other rare nonsense.

Which is a misleading statement,, as you are implying these are the only things that CAN stop RP and EL, and things which remove the unit as a casualty most certainly DO stop RP / EL from working (Sweeping Advance)

One slightly annoying application of RP/EL is to counter Lukas the Trickster, whose TLL stasis bomb can somehow gib anything up to and including Titans, but not guarantee a single Necron will stay down. (How DOES the repair work, when one is trapped in a stasis field?)

Well that wouldn't stop Lukas' The Last Laugh from happening, as it hits everyone in base contact, but well played!
That also begs the question of how his Pelt of the Doppelgangrel would work against hits from himself. Would he have to re-roll them because he can't see himself?! That'd be absolutely hilarious.
'Cron: Stop hitting yourse- wait what the?
Lukas: Joke's on you! I can't even find myself!
More hilarity would ensue if TLL was an attack and thus could wind up being directed against himself, but sadly it's just a roll-off. Lukas somehow misses himself with his own stasis bomb planted in his own chest. *cue rules debate to decide if he's actually dead or not, which turns into a three hour long brainstorm session to figure out how one would even begin to miss oneself in such a manner.* (Then again it's Lukas the Trickster. I wouldn't put it past him to pull a stunt like that!)
