Hey, what's up?! Dakka Dakka looks the place to be, healthy population, pics, info for all armies. So i chose here over the other places.
I just got back into 40k after 13 years. I'm 26 and seem to have an issue with biking related injuries so thought i'd try a new (& lasting, hopefully) hobby to pass some recovery time.
Some basic info about me.
Tyranids! Previous and current army.
Rode bike trials & bmx for half my life.
Astronomy, cosmology, science and philosophy are things i like to learn and think about.
Into allot of music and a wannabe audiophile.
Did try my hand at competitive Halo, but wasn't feeling the community and Halo 4 kinda sucked along with my skills.
I've recently throw down £500+ at Games Workshop. I'm one to try and support shops who retail in specialised departments and who have cool people owning/ working there. At GW you can hang out on Saturday and paint stuff, everyone's friendly and they supply boards to play on/ painting classes/ rule workshops etc. So why not support them??
I visited a club near me on Sunday, called Bristol Big 'uns, (they seem cool!). They often liked to talk about ebay and i noticed on here someone say about 4x4' boards in GW. See where i'm going now? Does GW allow you and a friend to use their tables without booking even? (i have no friends who play). GW is expensive (i'm on minimum wage), ebay (2nd hand) is cheap, GW don't have that great of facilities (tiny shops). So should i just buy GW products elsewhere and let the stores "go under" and play elsewhere?
What about other stores? All i've seen on here is terrible customer service from UK model shops who offer large discounts, yet they appear to be stores that i would like to support. From the reviews i'm gonna stay well away though.
What's the deal with finecast? A guy pretty much told me to stay well away. Even before i looked at peoples opinions on this new material, i noticed the stuff really wasn't worth it's money. Plastic, yes expensive, but great quality. Nice coloured box too.
Finecast is messy, low quality and the same price as metal was, eh, erm, what?
A GW staff member overheard me asking another dude about finecast who appeared to share the same feelings as me. I thought surely that everything being plastic would be cheaper (less machinery) but; the GW staff member said because certain models are in low demand GW make them from finecast, a considerably cheaper mold.
ps. Zoanthropes have never been so (swearing) bad. I have spent £40 on that finecast trash. I would happily pay £20 each for the old legged and armed lead Zoanthrope of the past.
I sent an email to GW on Friday regarding my feelings, and that i'm considering not bothering with finecast anymore.
So where do i buy my Battleforce and Hive Tyrant from?
My Tyranid army will be something like (first game Friday).
Flyrant- Devs x2
Flyrant- Devs x2 (1500+)
2x Zoans
1x Zoans
3x Hive Guard
Tervigon
Termigaunts
Hormigaunts, outflanking (1500+)
Warriors (1500+)
Maybe some Carnifexs outflanking when playing 1500+
Basically something like that. Probably not going to bother with anything else for the mo. But keen to try a Swarmlord, but gastly finecast guard prevent me!
Thanks.
ps. Any short hand info would be helpful.
eg. Tarpit units?
Nidzilla (monstrous creature army?)
etc

Welcome to Dakka, I agree this is the place to be. Yeah I seem to buy all my stuff from GW as well. Hopefully you recover from your injury soon! Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and don't worry about finecast, sometimes there can be a small detail loss through bubbles and stuff, if this happens just call GW and they will mail you a replacement for free. Doesn't happen very often though. My chaos Typhus finecast model is perfect and beautiful.

While I have no personal experience of Bristol, I would be surprised if there wasn't an independent retailer who sold GW products near-by.
These shop can often have discounts of up to 25% on the GW retail prices and you can get involved in the community there and meet people to play with. That way you get cheaper prices, probably better customer service and you get to support a local business.

So Hello,
I didn't see the point in opening up a new welcome thread for Bristol when there already is one. I've been in Bristol for a while now just painting and collecting not really playing the game but talking alot with guys down at GW and other stores like CnT used to be before it shut. Currently undertaking a large project of a space hulk beteween myself and my friend (who if he allows me will either post on my profile or I'll get him to create his own and we'll post pics) just need to break the barrier of painting 'Nids. Big space marine and IG fans. Normally we buy from GW but are tending to go down to Vanguard wargamming on Hotwells (if you know where that is, I definitely recommend you go there, awesome service and range!) due to variety as they supply forgeworld kit. So yeah, that's me!
Cheers guys,
Andrew

They will have tactics, strategies and machines such that no foe will best them in battle.
They are my bulwark against the terror.
They are the defenders of Humanity.

I second vanguard as a good place to buy stuff and play games. I've arranged a few games against strangers through their forums and it's always worked out well. Their tables and scenery is really good!
