I've been out of the hobby for so long after doing 6 years in the military i don't know where to start. As of right now all i have is a codex and a box of longfangs. Should i buy the battleforce to start with in a small 1000 pointer. I'm not asking for someone to build a list for me pre-say just asking for a little direction on where to start build or what to build around.

I personally like the Space Wolves Battlefoce. It comes with 20 Grey Hunters/Blood Fangs/Wolf Guard and a drop pod which is very nice. The scouts are okay. If you want your guys to have melta guns sadly the battlefoce does not include them, or at least mine didn't. Other than that I might get a Space Marine Commander and convert him into a Rune Priest or just covert one guy from the battlefoce into a Rune Priest. You already have Long Fangs so you are golden (but it doesn't hurt to get more!).

I make bad decisions and think they are good.

Well it really depends on what style of play you want to go with.

When I started I picked up some cheap assault on black reach stuff, which currently is not an option since the prices jumped up with dark vengeance being the new starter set.

At 1500 Points I normally run.

Rune Priest
4 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armor - pack leaders for the grey hunters to stand out infront of the grey hunters to soak as many shots as possible
40 Grey Hunters - 10 man squads for the free special weapon
2 Squads of Long Fangs

To start off and have a solid core I would say pick up these

1. a rune priest or better yet convert one from regular space wolf bits.
2. 30-40 grey hunters
3. another box of long fangs

I personally picked up the battle force and a few space wolves packs ... in my opinion the battle force is not worth it, I have yet to assemble the scouts since they can no longer assault on the turn they arrive, and looking back I defiantly overpaid for the army that I have because I could not decide on what units I wanted to field early on.

Buying efficiently really depends on what type of army you want to run.

The space wolves pack box only comes with plasma guns - no melta guns or flamers which come inside the tactical squad box, you can buy them individually from GW or ebay but its going to cost you.

Personally If I were you I would pick up

2 Tactical Squad Boxes
2 Space Wolves Pack Box
1 Devastator Box

Start off playing a foot wolves army and see what you want to purchase from there .... before buying anything I would suggest hashing out a list and comparing the individual bits that come inside the boxes to what you have in mind. There are alot of sites that have the listing of what comes in each box.

Also if your looking for cheap space marines with bolters the dark vengeance tactical squads are still pretty cheap to buy from ebay or other sites .... would just take some time to remove all of the dark
angel icons. Then get your special weapons / long fang heavy weapons models individually from ebay.

But if you want to mix in thunder wolf cavalry or go mech it means you have to buy differently.

- hope this helped.

It helped a lot thank you guys. You addressed the only real concern i had with it being is the battle force overpriced and not worth it. Again thank you

The SW battleforce is a great deal. My advice? By the battle force then, separate out the wolf scouts and sell them on ebay. Keep everything else. Next time you make a purchase and before you build all of your models, get a space marine tactical squad. You can mix and match the stuff from the SW sprues with the SM sprues to get 30 Space Wolves. I recommend building 29 of them as Grey Hunters and converting one as a Rune Priest.

The reason I say you should get the Tactical Marines is because the Tactical Marine box comes with a Meltagun and a Missile Launcher - two bits which are hard to come by, expensive to buy separately and don't come with any of your space wolf sprues.

When I built my army, I bought this stuff over a few years and in this order.

30 Space Wolves + 2 Devastator squads + Land Raider (part of an ebay deal for about $200)
7 Missile Launcher Bits (for like $50 after shipping. I know right?)
Njal Stormcaller (metal in a blister)

This ^ was my initial purchase to get me started. My next big purchase was

5 Razorback Kits

Never ever buy a plain Rhino kit. One razorback kit is enough to build a rhino and have bits left over to play it as a Razorback whenever you feel like it. This way I can do a Rhino rush army or a Razorback spam army whenever I feel like it. Then I mostly impulse purchased the following stuff.

2 boxes of Thunderwolf Cavalry (possibly the best purchase I've made so far)
a bunch of meltaguns and combi meltas (I don't remember how much I paid, but I'm sure it was too much and I know my wife was pissed.)
Another Battleforce. (for the drop pod and some lulz.)
Another Tactical Squad (to make a unit of Wolf Guard)
1 box of SW Terminators
1 Aegis Defense Line

I almost never use the Terminators or the Wolf Scouts, but I love the models. I wish I had bought Drop Pods instead of Rhinos, although the Drop Pod from the battle force was a huge pain in the ass to build and paint. Rhinos are a piece of cake in comparison to a Drop Pod. I still have a TON of wolfy bits.

Painted up I have, 40 Grey Hunters, about 16 Long Fangs, 5 TWC, 1 Wolf Lord on a Thunderwolf, 4 Terminators that could be characters, Wolf guard or Lone Wolves, the Land Raider, 2 Rhino/Razorbacks, Drop Pod, Njal in Termintator armor, 5 wolf scouts, a couple of wolf priests and a rune priest converted from the SW sprues and the Defense Line. I still have stuff to paint on my workbench.

ALSO...if you plan on doing any wolf guard or TWC you most definitely should magnetize the arms.

You'll find that walking your Grey Hunters isn't sound, if you have frienemies that run Heldrakes!

I use Rhinos myself, but I too want drop pods. I focused on getting the 15 missile fangs ASAP and I have melta guns, but focus on plasma.

I recommend making models for Mark of the Wulfen; it's both a fluffy, fun upgrade and practical! They always make for good stories. I modeled dudes who look super angry and are dual wielding melee weapons.

Not a fan of our terminators. They can't deep strike and Land Raiders don't fit my style. However, Lone Wolves in TDA/SS/CF are AMAZING for their cost. Our little PITA speed bumps that are either dealth with by the enemy or massive thorns in their sides. Good times are had with them too.

Stear clear of anything with "blood" in the name, unless you want to rock out fluff style.

Rune priests are a must these days.

If you want thundercav, go big or go home. Run a kitted out squad of 3~5 with a Thunderlord and go to town.
