Hi Folks,

I've just about finished painting a maulerfiend and accidentally set the rear legs such that it needs to be more upright on the base. I also happen to play necrons and saw the necron tomb stalker and thought - hey! I can steal that idea to solve my problem - no problem

Here's a shot of my rendition of the maulerfiend assaulting a tau piranha:

Here's what's on forge world's site that I want to mimic:

So what I'm looking for are tutorials on how to make the landscaping for the oval base. As you can see in the FW picture it's not flat. The ground, especially around the piranha, comes up and turns into dirt where the vehicle supposedly crashed. I've found some good tutorials on building hills over at 3T studios but would like some other suggestions. Thanx!

P.S. Sorry about the crappy picture - I used my iphone 4s to take it...

First of all - WIZARDS! What a film to remember. Secondly: if you want a "raised ground" effect then make some papier mache (not too much), put it about the base (near the piranha) and slightly under it, you can shape it a little to make it appear like the piranha has carved a rut in the dirt. When this dries (which will take a while), cover it with sand and rocks, maybe mixing in parts of one of the gun drones or the piranha so it looks smashed apart. Adding battle damage to the piranha will also help. Once that's dried, prime, paint, and flock.

Since it looks like you've already painted the piranha (bad move IMO), what you can also do is just buy some sand/rock and pile that about the base. I would strip the piranha (hours of work gone yes, but a much better looking model in the end!)

Lastly you can also buy terrain formation materials from Woodland Scenics. They have a range of molding materials for land masses, rocks, and turf.

Or you could give me that piranha and instead use bodies of space marines, with cork, and paper clips, and paper mache to make it look like a rotting dead pile of earth and other such things.

Yep, childhood memories...Ralph Bakshi did some incredible stuff considering it was the 70's.

My thoughts were more along the lines that the piranha on my base has literally just crashed whereas the one that the tomb stalker is climbing is obviously being there awhile. I just finished painting as much of my piranha as I planned on before 'adding' battle damage. That's the next phase for it. Maybe some scorch marks or something - could probably use some guidance on that as well. Like the idea of some debris strewn about. Will definitely do that.

Papier mache I can do - that's a great idea - thanx!

lol Yeah I'll probably get a lot of grief from the tau players in my club for wasting $25 to create a base I had it sitting in my closet and when the new dex came out it seemed like the piranha wasn't any better and if anything fell even lower in the tau pecking order. But that's another forum....
