I'm assuming you're talking about the brown ones that come in Open Fire (amongst their other kits, but I've only purchased Open Fire)

I don't mind them, but I'm starting to look at these scenic bases I found out about a few days ago:

I might be picking these up like hotcakes... They're awesomely detailed, and would give me something to paint beyond the tiny little infantry

I prefer bases that tell me where to put things, but then I've not played any other system which doesn't have a "the model takes up pretty much the entire base anyway" basing system like Warhammer does. With Warhammer the choice is really only "do I prefer the left foot hanging over slightly, or do I prefer the right foot hanging over slightly? ARGH! DECISIONS!"

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

These days I base everything on MDF bases. No warping, you can actually pick them up, 1/3 the price of plastic and even a pleasant burnt wood smell when you open the bag they come in.

I like the bases.
But its a matter of opinion...
I am new to the scale and to have little holes to help me "get it right" was nice. Plus, they fit into the base and it cuts down on the amount of filler i have to use to make the base "even".

I have to admit, I'm liking the newer "rubble" style bases too. and some of those special scenic bases...WOW!

The flat bases are too much gloopy work. Hulk doesn't like gloop on his little painted men. Gloop on Hulk's painted men makes Hulk angry. HULK SMASH GLOOP ON LITTLE PAINTED MEN!! oops.

I have mixed emotions.

I do like the fact that they are recessed. The plastic models fit nicely in the holes, and even metal models fit after cliping the bases a little bit. Having the base in the hole also means I am not messing with pumice and I am able to use PVA and sand to make everything match up.

The downside is that I have limited option for positioning the models, so there is less ability to customize and add extra stuff to the base.
