'Ricin' found in letter to US Senator Roger Wicker
Roger Wicker, a Republican senator in Mississippi, was the intended recipient of the letter
A letter containing ricin or another poisonous substance has been posted to a US senator, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said.
The letter was intended for Roger Wicker, a Republican senator representing Mississippi, Mr Reid told the Associated Press news agency.
It was intercepted at a centre handling post for the Capitol in Washington DC, US media report.
Ricin, extracted from castor beans, is 1,000 times more toxic than cyanide.
It can be fatal when inhaled, swallowed or injected, although it is possible to recover from exposure

Bloody hell, glad the fella dodged that bullet.
This is turning out to be a fething terrible week, to be honest, for these kind of stories. It's actually mind-boggling a bit.

Seems like somewhat of an odd target. The senator isn't exactly a household name outside the Hill and his constituency. Anyone have any insight into what sort of groups he may have pissed off?

It's allegedly ricin...
CNN is now saying it showed 1 positive, 1 negative, and 1 inconclusive.
It may be that we're all hyper sensitive now...

That does seem really weird. He doesn't seem like a guy that has done something to tick off people to the point that they'd want to kill him.

I think it's a false alarm...
However... if someone were to do this, it wouldn't matter whose the recipient of such attack... it'd be bad no matter what.

Seems like it would be a easy enough job.

I agree that it's bad no matter what, I feel it's worst if it's happening to a senator that is just doing his job the best he can, isn't making any enemies, and seems like a wholesome dude...

Well, I think we can rule out a criminal genius at work if that was the guilty party. Automatically Appended Next Post: Looks like this is the story that keeps on giving - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22190031
A letter addressed to US President Barack Obama containing a "suspicious substance" has been intercepted.
Initial tests on the letter, identified at a remote facility, showed the presence of the lethal toxin ricin.
The letter, which arrived at the facility on 16 April, is related to another laced with ricin intended for a US senator, the FBI said.
Meanwhile, US Capitol Police are questioning a suspect in connection with the tainted letters, reports say.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said the letters addressed to the president and Republican Senator Roger Wicker were both were postmarked Memphis, Tennessee and dated 8 April.
The contents of the letter intended for President Obama are being sent to an accredited laboratory for further analysis, the FBI said, with results expected in 24 to 48 hours.
While there is a heightened sense of alert in the capital after Monday's deadly bomb attacks at the Boston marathon, the FBI said there was "no indication of a connection".
All congressional mail has been sorted and tested off-site since letters laced with anthrax were posted to two senators in 2001.
A spokesman for the Secret Service, which protects the US president and his family, said it was liaising with the US Capitol Police and the FBI to trace the origins of the letters.
Ricin, extracted from castor beans, is 1,000 times more toxic than cyanide.
It can be fatal when inhaled, swallowed or injected, although it is possible to recover from exposure.

http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20130417/NEWS/304170067/Kenneth-Curtis-Tupelo-arrested-connection-ricin-letters?odyssey=mod%7Cbreaking%7Ctext%7CHome&nclick_check=1
Federal sources have confirmed to The Clarion-Ledger that Kenneth Curtis of Tupelo has been arrested in connection with letters laced with ricin that were sent to Sen. Roger Wicker and President Barack Obama.
Federal authorities were in Tupelo on Wednesday investigating the letters. Both letters were signed: "I am KC and I approve this message."
Agents with the Secret Service and the FBI used the Lee County Sheriff’s Department as a staging area for their investigation. Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson confirmed an investigation, but would not comment on the nature of the investigation.
“We have an investigation that is going on that has got local and federal authorities working together,”
he said.
The letter, received by Wicker’s office on Tuesday, had a Memphis postmark and no return address, Senate Sergeant at Arms Terrance Gainer wrote in an e-mail to senators and aides. Tupelo’s mail is routed through Memphis.
The ricin was confirmed by preliminary tests on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Obama received a similar letter, and once again, preliminary tests showed there was ricin in it.
An FBI bulletin stated that both letters, postmarked April 8, included the identical phrase: "to see a wrong and not expose it, is to become a silent partner to its continuance."
Wicker, a Pontotoc native who has an office in Tupelo, has been assigned a protective detail.
Wicker serves in the Senate as deputy whip and on the the Armed Services, Budget, Commerce, Environment and Public Works, and Joint Economic Committees. He has been a middle-of-the-road senator in the Republican Conference, ranking as the 27th most conservative member of the upper chamber, according to the National Journal. He is known to be conservative on most social issues.
Wicker has stood firmly against Obama’s health-care law. He is a recipient of an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association, though he was one of 16 Republican senators who last week stepped over party lines with his party to vote in favor of beginning the debate on a gun-control bill.

Dunno... but it's been confirmed (so far) that these letters are unrelated to the Boston attack... as the letters were mailed prior to the marathon.
