When ive been playing against my buddy and his necrons and ive locked into combat with his scarab swarms any unsaved wounds I inflict he will spread out amongst as many of his models as possible which i feel is a little bit of shenanigans. Should not all the wounds be allocated to one model till it is removed before he allocate to the next one or is he allowed to spread em out as long as they are in base contact with enemy models?

At any one I step you MUST allocate wounds to a model in btb with a model swinging at that I step until that model is dead, or there are no more wounds left in the wound pool for that I step

At following steps you can pick a new model to start taking wounds, but not during an I step

You must continue to allocate Wounds to the same model. (Paraphrased, BRB pg 25). This seems to be per Initiative step though.

It has to be, really, as the rules for allocating in close combat require those in btb with the model fighting to be picked on first, and with a very mixed unit this could be a model well away from the already wounded scarabs

your oponent is still playing by the previous rulebook where this was allowed.

The way it works is:

Lets say for example that they have 5 bases, you score 8 wounds (each base has 3 wounds).

They must pick a base to start and go..

wound
wound
wound (1 base dead - move on to next base)
wound
wound
wound (2nd base dead, move on)
wound
wound

So he is left with 3 bases, one of which has a single wound left.

Actually it wasn't allowed in the previous rule book either.

I thought that was how people used to play shennigans with things like GW Paladins - spread the wounds around the unit to keep the max number of models in at a time.

In 5th edition you had to equally apply wounds to the fgroups of differently armed / wargeared models. Within that wound group you had to then remove whole moedls if possible, or wound already wounded models first.

Paladins, nobs etc could all be made unique to that squad, meaning they were each their own group. As such you COULD spread them around

Scarabs were a single wound group in 5th, so you could not perform this trick.
