Hey guys, I'm a beginner painter. Basically never painted anything in my life before Warhammer, and all I've painted it 500 points worth of Salamanders.

Now that Tau got a codex update, I can finally start my favorite race(wohoo).

I was looking at the digital book, and for $15 it doesn't seem bad. I was wondering if it is worth it? Would it be helpful for a newbie like me?

Maybe for a paper copy, but paying full-price for the ebook version is a bit of a ripoff. Personally, you'd be better off looking at some tutorials online first, as you'll probably only get the tan-brown scheme in the book with little variation on it.

Quite frankly, I think you'd be better off just browsing the internet for various picture tutorials, or browsing youtube. If you REALLY wanna pay 15 bucks then go ahead, but I am reasonably sure that there are better techniques on the internet.

I am a total cynic with regard to these painting guides, being of an age where these things were typically included in White Dwarf.

That said, I did cave and get the daemons one, as there were one or two aspects of their studio scheme that I was interested to know the colours etc.. so I could replicate them or adapt them.

I was disappointed because the studio schemes I wanted didn't really feature BUT I was pleasantly surprised by the document in general and specifically it had a technique for rust which I have used and works really well.

So, while I still consider them too expensive, they aren't a lot of money, and while it might not give you exactly what you want, but it may well give you something you weren't expecting.

I would refuse to buy it purely on principal that GW were dumb to sign the contract with apple that makes them only able to digitally publish via apple bookstore for ipads only.
Id buy pdf's all day long off them, but being elitist ipad format only publishers is a big screw you to the consumer, who may well want to purchase and use said guides and other material, but doesnt want to buy the overpriced apple garbage

On a note of content, these kinds of things used to be included in white dwarf all the time, gouging us for what used to be basically free (cost of white dwarfs, which seemed much more worth it back then)
I think any information you will need is out there on the world wide web in picture, video and text formats. Anything that isnt there could likely be discussed somewhere such as dakka with good results

I have an iPad, so that doesn't really concern me.

Probably the best source for all things Tau. There are actually several of that sept over there, I am pretty sure that you will be able to find some pointers.
