So here is my question Dakka. To achieve the white upon this model while still keeping with a gritty boltgun/chainmail color should I primer grey? I know that a white primer would be the lazy way out but I'm afraid the silver will not cover that. Also I'm trying to avoid the painful layering to white with the black primer, so has anyone had any luck with the more neutral grey primers?

Layering white over black primer would probably be your best bet.

I was afraid of that, but I agree. I could attempt to wash the silver down but from my experience it just does not want to cover over anything that isn't black. And that goes for GW, Vallejo and PP

Seeing as silver's the dominant colour, it would be best to prime black like you said, anything else just doesn't look right. A quick foundation coat of grey should help though when it comes to doing the white.

My sisters are that exact scheme and I started with a black undercoat. The armor I did with "boltgun metal" which covered without a problem, and then highlighted up with mithril silver. I suspect the current GW line for metallics would be just as good (I've had zero luck with other brands of metallics other than Coat D Arms, the original GW paints).

The white I did with foundation grey, then a lighter grey, then up to white. I haven't used, but suspect ceramite white would work well for this, I've heard it covers well.
