The bare minimum that I have is like this
Trazyn the Infinite
2x 6 man group of necron warriors
necron destroyer
1x 3 base scarab swarm unit.
Wondering what my next purchase should be.

What point size are you going for?

I'd get immortals, a crpytek or two, x5 deathmarks, a Night Scythe, and Lychguard to go with Trollzyn, he synergizes with them well, then look into getting x3 Annihilation Barges, they're almost must-takes

personally i think you should pick up a scythe or two and magnetize them
3 barges
tons of warriors or some immortals
5 deathmarks and a cryptek

The best option would probably be the battleforce since that gives you more troops, and troops win battles. and with it you would have 32 warriors, and a ghost ark, and those work well together. you would also have a lot of scarabs so getting some spyders would give you the option of a scarab farm if you wanted.
Probably the best value units in the codex are annihilation barges, since you can assemble them as Command barges or annihilation barges and you get an overlord as part of the set.

From there, with a solid set of troops in the form of warriors, and either immortals or deathmarks, you should probably invest in some crypteks, i converted mine from warriors, deathmark heads and parts from the Lychguard/Praetorian set, and you can do something similar with immortals to make lords, i used the heads from lychguard and the Ghost ark pilot to make them unique.

The further on, solid buys are Wraiths, more immortals, and Nightscythes. but as with any army, having a solid core of troops is the best bet before you get more special stuff

A lot of solid options would be, as people have stated, Anni barges, Wraiths, and Night Scythes are always solid buys. Really, really hard to go wrong with those. But if you're a little less mainstream and want to run the various other options we have in our codex, here are a few options, that I find generally pretty satisfying to run. We have AV13 spam, where you max out on AV13 vehicles, such as two CCBs, 3-4 ghost arks, 3 Anni barges, stalkers if you like those with a wraith squad or two mixed in for support. Also silver tide, which generally runs 3 20 (or 15)x warrior squads with one or two ghost ark supports and sprinkled in with what you like (I like AB support and lords with res orbs). There's scarab farms, maxing out on spyders (9) and letting your scarabs overrun everything. Lychguard deathstar, which trazyn makes scoring (expensive, never personally used, but I hear it's fun and killy. Slow though). Destroyer wing, max out destroyers for lots of str 5, ap 3 shooting (not sure how competitive this is though. Those destroyers are so expensive and fragile!). Also we of course have wraithwing, which is always good. There's a lot of stuff available in our codex, but that's just a few off the top of my head. You can even go hybrid, which will still be fairly strong. 2 ghost arks, 2 scythes, 3 anni barges is a good core for a hybrid list. Lots of durability and added mobility with the scythes.

But for basics, I would recommend what madtanbloke said. The necron battleforce is one of the best battleforces you can currently buy, so is the barge set. Free HQ ftw.

You need a lot more warriors. With that few they will be wiped out entirely. One of your strengths is that if one warrior remains after a bad turn, the others will stand back up. Having only 6 warriors per squad is going to mean they get hammered hard and fast and there's nothing left to reanimate.

As we get more army books flyer spam is going to get less and less powerful (we already are seeing it). So I would not suggest picking a strategy like flyer spam. I really like wraiths, I think they are the strongest unit in the necron codex so you may want to get some of those. Play around with a few units and proxy a few models before buying if you can.

My cousin loves his wraiths, his monolith, his deathmarks and his doom scythe. Not a lot of people seem to like the monolith but wraiths and marks seem pretty much badass lol

5 Destrukteks shoul;d be the next purchase. And then a Night Scythe.

Well, if you go for a competitive army, I'd pick up the following:

3 Annihilation Barges,
Destroyer Lord
2x 6 Wraiths
2x 10 Immortals
3 Night Scythes.

Wraiths are exceptionally good.

Thank you for all of the great answers! From the sound of it, based on what you guys said, I should pick up the battle force and a night scythe. One more question, should i make a doom scythe aswell, or just not bother.

Get yourself a battle box. You need warriors before anything else.

You could prob get things cheaper on Barter Town tho.

Warriors are real cheap. Then you could get an Anni. Barge and a ghost ark too. Under what a Box costs.
