so I recently received a fair amount of guardsmen so I'm testing them out against some orks tomorrow. I've barely finished reading through the codex so any critisism or suggestions are welcome. I'm fairly sure he's expecting my Nids if that helps with tactics

Vanquishes are never a good idea considering the LR is bs3 also I would suggest making the vet squad just another infantry squad

Doubt is the open gate through which slips the most fatal of enemies.

I´m not into medics in IG lists. WIth their toughness of 3 pretty much everything could instant death them rendering your FNP useless.
Another thing i would not take (i don´t have many games under my belt but i´m a serial theorycrafter ) is the additional armor because the name is somehow misleading. you don´t add anything to your armor but you swap crew stunned into crew shaken results. Very situational imo...

I'm not a fan of vox casters in 6th Edition. Med packs are too many points for what you get in return. I tend not to give commanders any upgrades. Their primary value is their ability to give orders.

I use him too. He helps out with the Linebreaker victory point.

Be careful with the heavy weapon squad. It will need cover. With LD7 it won't last long once it takes 25% casualties.
Still not crazy about vox casters and weapon upgrades for leaders (other than power axes for commissars and blob sergeants). Sniper weapons are usually best in mass (3 or 4 in a command squad).

infantry platoon
squad, melta, vox, commisar w/ bolt pistol plasma pistol. sarg w/ bolt pistol power weapon 122pt
squad, plasma, sarg w/ bolt pistol, close combat weapon 67pt
platoon command, standard, 2 snipers, vox. commander w/ plasma pistol, power fist 85pt

Does the commissar have a bolt pistol or a plasma pistol? I would just keep with the bolt pistol and give him a power axe.
Other comments above still apply on commander and sergeant upgrades. I'm not a fan of plasma guns in plain infantry squads.

veteran squad, 7 lasguns, 2 plasmas, vox. chimera w/ heavy bolt, multi laser. sarg w/ bolt pistol, close combat 162pt

I like the occasional veteran squad with three plasma guns in a Chimera. Other comments above apply to vox and sergeant.

Heavy Support
Vanquisher, extra armor, heavy flamer, pintle storm bolt, camo net 200pt
2 basilisks, extra armor, heavy bolt, pintle storm 300pt

Why extra armor? Why a Vanquisher? I agree with sbam10 that you will not get much value from it. You are better off with a Manticore or some other LR variant (Demolisher and plain jane Executioner are my favorites).

Aegis Defense Lines with Quad Guns and Vendettas are strong additions to most IG armies.

For allies consider Space Wolves with a Rune Priest and a squad of Grey Hunters.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.
