Subject: New Tau, any good?

Hey guys, am looking to change my army. I am currently fielding a grey knight army and have got slightly board with the tactics associated with them, also board of stomping over my mates necrons time and time again with 2+ Armour lol.
Tau are one of the only armies I have not played with and the question is are they a decent army to play with, they must have the ability to win games but also have an element of fun as well.
Any input would be appreciated.
Andy

If you mean good as in varied, then yes. If you mean good as in an OP army, no.
I think they are a good and flavorfull army with plenty of options and balance. As for the ability to win games, that's not the army, that's the player.

I would argue with this. The 3 Riptides + FW Castle setup is ridiculous. it is pretty forgiving and can eat anything for breakfast. Especially assault armies (surprise-surprise).

The Tau tactic is to shoot down everything before it gets close to you. Against pure assault armies, it works frustratingly well.
Against Necron, I don't really know... but atleast you'll have a metric tonne of skyfire to shoot his flyers down.

Until a few barrage rounds land in there and destroy all of the Fire Warriors, leaving the Riptides markerlightless.

Yeah, the best case scenario... When you have Barrage weapons, when your opponent ignores your Barrage weapons, when you opponent packs his FWs/ PFs in a huge blob, instead of spacey "waves", when said FWs/ PFs are not in Area Terrain and of course when your Barrage weapon actually hits its intended target... So when all the stars align, you can kill a handful of FWs/ PFs... A-W-E-S-O-M-E .

Yeah, just like when you turtle in cover, on an emtpy battlefield, and your opponent brings nothing but melee grunts, and runs right into your battle line, and all of your marker lights hit, and your nova charged Riptides don't kill themselves... So when all the stars align, you can kill a bunch of melee grunts who die to a breeze... A-W-E-S-O-M-E . Just FYI - a Tyranid army packing a single brood of Biovores would absolutely wreck an army of turtled Fire Warriors. One ~150pt brood.
