Hi guys/girls , i have been playing CSM for a while and now i decided to start a new army .I where going around Miniwargamings video and fell in love with the IG , but i have no idea where to start.

I manage to get my hands on a army book(Codex) but now i need help with picking a good HQ and my first HS .I have decided to buy two groups with 10 cadian guards men to use but i have no idea what HQ that i should by and also what upgrades i should give my guardsmen's .

I really need help and im going for getting a army with balance between tanks/artillery and infantry units

i where also thinking of doing a color scheme that looks like this
any advices on how to make that kind of cloth and that dark grey color ??

Impossible to say without this:

What kind of army do you want? Foot, Mech, Airbourne, Heavy Tanks, Artillery, Hybrid? Platoons or Vets for troops?

Any particular units you want especially in your army?

Without these it's really hard without going through every single unit in the guard codex.

There are several good HQ's. The CCS is the best all-rounder, whilst the Lord Commissar and the Primaris Psyker both have their uses for different builds of army.

I almost always suggest starting with the Battleforce. You might not use the Sentinel, but it's still cheaper for the rest than buying them separately.

CCS is usually the way to go starting out. Use orders, try some special weapon arrangements. They're very flexible.

Whichever HS grabs your attention, honestly. Russes are solid. If you buy the Demolisher kit you can magnetize and pick up the extra Russ frame to make a Battle Tank, which is probably every option you'd ever want. Ordinance is great; they only make a Basilisk kit though. I like Manticores, too.

If you like Veterans over Platoons, you might rather some Chimeras and melta/plasma guardsmen.

Guard are super flexible. It really does depend on what kind of tactics you prefer. There's lots of ways to make them effective.

Well, you've got two main options for balancing infantry and tanks. The first is to take an infantry horde and support it with leman russ spam (like this), and the other is to take dudes and put them inside of transports (like this).

You've done a good job by buying a couple of boxes of infantry. After this, you're going to be looking for more boxes of infantry or some chimeras. As for what weapons to take, take strong ones. Things like S8 melta or S9+. Unless you really know what you're doing with them, don't spend any points on upgrades that aren't also weapons.

As for the color scheme, I'd prime grey, paint the clothing ushtanabi bone, and the armor codex grey with a little bit of black mixed into the pot. Then wash everything agrax earthshade.

Generally you're going to want to go for platoons OR mechanized vets, not a little bit of both. 50 guys and 3 chimeras isn't nearly as scary as 100 guys or 6 chimeras full of meltavets.

As for HQ, if you're going with foot guard, take a CCS with a regimental standard. A neat little buff unit. You don't get use of the buffs so much with a mech list, though. A CCS is still a good take, loaded with special weapons, but the lord commissar or psyker will also do as cheaper alternatives.

Basilisks are fine, and so is the general idea of artillery. Mech+artillery was the most popular way to run guard in 5th ed, and this style didn't lose THAT much of its potency.

That all said, I think I'd find the extra points to take medusas or colossuses (depending on what you need more of), as you'll likely do better with a few different quasi-specialists than you will with a few generalists in this case.

Just watch the minimum range on the Basilisk. 36 inches on a 4 by 6 board wont give you very much table to shoot at.

6000 Pts of Ultramarines
3500 Pts of Imperial Guard
4000 Pts of Necrons
1500 Pts Of Eldar
Still got to build my Tyranids

Like Ailaros said, I'd favor the Medusa or Colossus over the Basilisk. Points are very close. In the Medusa you get great anti-vehicle with a large blast for horde armies and low enough AP to beat anything. The Colossus is more strictly anti-infantry, but the Strength is high enough to wound most any troops on a 2+, AP enough for non-Terminators, and it ignores cover.

Alternatively, you could peruse the websites listed in this thread. Some may have kits that you can buy that will allow you to convert a tank to a Medusa or Colossus.

I suggest MaxMini. I have their AA Turret for a Hydra. my FLGS orders them through E-Figures, so it's worth asking if yours can get it. I'm pretty sure Forge World only does direct orders to customers, not wholesale.
