Hi folks.

Looking for your opinions on some strategically fun, competitive, small-model-count, elite armies that work in 6th ed.

Lists, tactics, ideas. Anything. Something small and surprising that makes regular armies have to adapt their stock strategies. Something ideally with units that make people wee their pants.

I usually play hoard armies (hence wanting something small next!) - could be deathwing, nob bikers, grey knights, maybe even a dreadnought-span BA. Anything welcome!

Thanks folks!

h.

If you want the iconic army for this, do Grey Knights.
4 Paladins and Draigo means 5 models for.... however many points.

I like Nob bikers.

What army to you play currently? Because I would recommend making an elite version of the army you have, (to save money)

Well, this edition is more about shooting. Small elite armies tend to get overwhelmed.
One issue is that fearless units do not suffer from additional hits when loosing one round of cc. This was different in the previous edition.
Wound allocation also works differently, definitely not in favor of Nob Bikerz or Palladins.
Therefore, I'd stay away from them these days.

Possible options are...

Grey Knights - Paladins and Draigo, or normal Terminator-heavy
Dark Angels - Deathwing with Belial or Ravenwing with Sammael (or both with Azrael)
Blood Angels - Sanguinary Guard with Dante, Dreadnought list (requires lots of Death Company for DC Dreads)
Space Marines - Sternguard-heavy with Pedro Kantor (this isn't as small as the others and is most effective with drop pods)

Probably the best elite army is Paladins with Draigo.

2 wound terminators with FNP and a EW character to tank STR 8 wounds is the best you can really get.

Paladins get a fantastic mix of force weapons and shooting and they can score with Draigo. Its a huge points sink but you get your points worth in the unit.

Another option is...

Orks - 2 Waagh Bosses and 2 large Nob Biker units (Nobz are scoring), Lootas, Boyz, Bommers.

Nurgle CSM lists can be small if you take Plague marines, Terminators, Obliterators & Lords in Terminator armor & Land Raiders .

They are pretty resilient to shooting & assault being T5 and can lay down some impressive firepower.

2k List
1 Terminator Lord MoN, Blight grenades Lighting Claw, Power Fist

4 Terminators MoN - 3 Combie
Land Raider

5 Plague marines - 2 Plasma Rhino
5 Plague marines - 2 Plasma Rhino
5 Plague marines - 2 Plasma Rhino
5 Plague marines - 2 Plasma Rhino

3 Obliterators MoN VoTLW

Paladins can still be pretty formidable if you support them correctly..

However, in 6th, elite armies are definitely at a disadvantage. I'd recommend against terminator based lists (that aren't paladins) due to the increase in large blobs of infantry that will simply outclass you in durability and damage output.

Actually the main reason Paladin lists suck now is that only 1 out of the 6 missions depend on killpoints, the rest are objectives, where seeing as how you're only going to be having 2, MAYBE 3 scoring units tops in a Draigonwing lists, its gonna be very hard to win.

Tell that to Nick Nanavati and Blackmoor who both reached top 8 at Adepticon..

In what world will Paladins only have 2-3 scoring units? Remember, Draigo himself makes D3 extra units score (extremely useful for making MCs and other non-troops score). You'll most likely have Coteaz which means super easy access to cheap troops..

Last year at NOVA, 2K points I had 5 troops base and the ability to make a Wraith deathstar scoring every game.

Paladin lists are dangerous because often times the majority of the list will actually be able to score.

Also, another elite army is a Tau Farsight army with a maxed out body guard unit. Fully kitted out you're gonna be spending nearly 1000 points on just the HQ and his unit.

That's not an elite army as such, it's just spending a lot of points on one unit.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Well the army will probably be low on models, if lots of suits are taken, so it could classify.
lol

FMC spam armies will generally be mostly elite. But take a ton of precision and dexterity to utilize. In the right hands, barring a few terrible matchups (scythe spam, psycannon spam, triple tervigon and extreme shooty tau), can do really well vs other elite armies, MEQs, etc.

Hi folks. Thanks for all this! Great advice. I like the ork nob bikers list- but I think you need a few dakkajets to make it competitive. I think I want to avoid GKs & tau if I can.

Any thoughts on a Death Company list - or an elite necron list?

Necrons: 2 Dlords and 18 Wraiths, 960 pts in toto. Add 3 Doomscythes or 3 ABarges. Add some troops in NS.

definitely like the look of a disco inferno list - man a maxed out royal court can eat the points!

Undead Eldar can be pretty elite pretty quickly...my main wraith guard unit with Farseers runs 741 points...adding a second block at 396 more, plus three bright lance/EML Wraithlords at 155 each puts you at 1601 already, fill out to taste. Eldrad with book powers plus a fortune/guide Farseer can make for some crazy shenanigans, with 5 rolls on the table(s).

For the greater glory of the Zoat Empire!
