Ap2, as he's a MC.

The weapon 'The Wailing Doom' relates to his ranged ability, he throws the spear or shoots fire from the sword or something. I forget the rules, but the profile is in the codex. You should read that sometimes

Any time a MC is in combat its attacks are resolved at AP2, unless its melee weapon is AP1.

For example, a Daemon Prince with the Black Mace has an AP4 weapon. He also has Smash. This means his melee attacks are both AP2 and AP4 at the same time, but of course only the AP2 matters.

If the Wailing Doom was actually a CCW the Avatar's melee attacks would have both AP- and AP2. One from the weapon, one from Smash.

All MCs get AP2 in cc, as they have Smash.
Any model with Smash has all cc attacks at AP2.
Unless they have AP1 for any reason. All worse-AP weapons get converted to AP2, or better.

I also have to state whether or not I want to smash though, hence why I want to know the AP value before smash.

Smash has two components. All of the model's cc attacks are AP2. AND you have the option to halve your Attacks characteristic for double strength attacks.

Moving to YMDC.

No, he uses it for Melee. And his attacks with are AP2, because he's a big, powerful MC; represented by the Smash rule.

Well, he uses in for melee in the fluff. On the TT however it doesn't do anything in melee IIRC.
