Hiya,
I am toying with the idea of an imperial fist army but have always been discouraged by the complexity of the yellow balance, I was wondering if any of you had used the new citadel range for them.

If so could you give me some feedback?

Much obliged.

I used to use the old iyandan dark sun foundation for them for a dirtier look, but the new bases will assist in this quite well, their coverage is good with a high pigmentation, then you can gently layer whatever brighter yellow over that to get they yellow you want without to much of an issue in the way of streakage or anything else.

You may use anything I post, just remember to give me credit if used somewhere else.

Don't use the new citadel range the best way iv found to do it is start with the army painter deamonic yellow undercoat spray and wash with army painter strong tone then highlight with the new citadel bright yellow

Hey candle_man, I know the arguments, but for the sake of Tobah why do you say don't use citadel, he specifically asked in the OP about the Citadel range of paints, I know a lot of people that use it to a great effect, the paint line is not as terrible as some people say, it is all on preference. To be honest I prefer reaper myself, but as that was not the question I tried to assist in what he asked, rather than say with no substantiating evidence as to why the paint is bad and mine is better. I like reaper because of the dropper bottles, the paint has better pigmentation and seems a bit smoother than citadel, but I still use a good bit of citadel as well.

Thanks Chap,

So if I was to use the citadel base/foundation paints then get brighter what would you suggest be my paint list? As I own no yellows..and is it best to start white white or blaxk primer? I have had many mixed opinions about the primer also.

Thanks.

i don't use citadel primer myself as it is really expensive per can and no better than what I use, I use krylon paint/primer and it is much cheaper and bonds with the plastic.

white primer will give you brighter more vibrant colors

black primer gives you more muted darker colors

and grey is right inbetween the two

depending on what you want you can go for any of these.

if you want as well you could go for a yellow spray and get the base coat and primer in one shot thus you are halfway there, home depot has a nice yellow to do this with even, at least on the website.

I'm not candle_man, but I read his post more pragmatically rather than as a general bashing of Citadel's paints (which he recommended finishing with, in fact). I thought his point was that using the Army Painter yellow primer is going to save you an absolute ton of work over brush painting basecoats of yellow no matter what paint line you picked. There would be lots of ways to proceed with the shading/highlighting from there, but I do think that finding a way to make the AP yellow primer work would save an awful lot of time over laying down an army's worth of yellow basecoats by brush.

Are you restricted to GW paints? because if you have an airbrush you could just use a grey than "pre highlight" so to speak highlighting with lighter greys up to white than spray yellow over it... I do this when I'm batch painting for my own armies sometimes commissions to get shading and highlighting done very easily... if you want something quick.

Mine (which are very bright yellow) are;

Primed Army Painter Skeleton Bone
2 thin coats of averland
1 thin coat of golden yellow
4 thin coats of sunburst yellow

Doesn't look too 'clumpy' or patchy.
