Store pulls monkey nuts from shelves over 'peanut warning'
Booths have withdrawn the 350g bags of monkey nuts
A supermarket chain has withdrawn bags of nuts - after failing to declare they may contain peanuts.
The Food Standards Agency issued an allergy alert saying the presence of peanuts was not declared on Booths' own brand packets of monkey nuts.
The supermarket has removed 300 packets of 350g Whole Hearted Roasted Monkey Nuts from its shelves.
Booths has apologised and warned customers with a peanut allergy not to consume the product.
Booths technical manager Waheed Hassan said: "It is our responsibility as retailers to accurately record allergy advice.
"In this instance, we felt a responsibility to recall the product and issue a notice to our customers who might suffer from a specific peanut allergy."
The term 'monkey nuts' describes peanuts with the shell or pod intact. Packets affected are marked with the best before date 12 July 2013.
In a statement, the supermarket said it had identified the labelling error and issued a warning to customers.
"If you have an allergy to peanuts, please do not consume this product and return it to your local store for a full refund.
"No other products are affected by this issue and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused."
Booths has 29 stores across the North of England in Cumbria, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire as well as one in Greater Manchester.
According to Allergy UK, peanut and tree nut allergy is the most common food allergy in adults and children.
Although the majority of peanut allergies are mild, some reactions can be severe causing difficulty in breathing due to asthma or throat swelling, or a drop in blood pressure.
I sincerely hope that allergy sufferers have not picked up a bag of peanuts by mistake.....................

They haven't gone far enough! It needs to be written in braille and have an audio version available at all times! And each nut must be individually wrapped and stamped with the warning! WE CAN'T TRUST ORDINARY PEOPLE TO PAY ATTENTION!

Actually it's a very sensible warning to have since the product is called "monkey nuts" and someone who isn't familiar with the term (I'd never heard it before) might not be aware that it's just peanuts, not a different kind of nut that they might not be allergic to.

I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people,
Lets just remove all the warning labels and let the problem sort itself out.
Monkey nuts are a common term in the uk for unshelled peanuts.

Agreed, I'd never heard of them called that either, except, if I saw a bag like this
and I had a severe allergy to peanuts, I might use a shred of common sense and be a little wary

Sir,
I recent bought a bag of you Cheeky Monkey brand Monkey Nuts. Imagine my surprise when I opened them to find neither monkeys or their nuts in the bag. What I found were some dried and roasted legumes.
I demand imediate action and have written to both my MP and the Health and Saftey Executive demanding punitive action against your company if I do not receive satisfaction as I have clearly been miss-sold this product.
If a man wants to eat bush meat then It should be of his own prerogative; This health and safety gone made!

On the plus side it appears that it will only be Northerners who may inadvertently buy monkey nuts in the mistaken belief they do not contain peanuts.
So in summary to any foreign persons coming here to shop; our monkey nuts contain peanuts but not monkeys, our beef burgers contain horse but not beef and our beef is beef but also contains Madness (or so the Frech would have you believe).

I say a supermarket should remove the 'contains peanuts' labels on Peanut Butter and see what happens; I could do with a laugh and the genepool could do with a bit of cleansing - win/win situation.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

At first I thought it was perfectly reasonable, because I assumed "Monkey Nuts" was a brand name for mixed nuts or something like that, and peanut allergies can be lethal.
Upon learning that "Monkey Nuts" refers specifically to peanuts in the shell, the level of stupidity and humour this creates is matched only by the immature humour of telling someone to go eat a bag of Monkey Nuts.

Nothing would happen. A peanut allergy is far more rare than the people who claim to have it make it out to be.

Does the law require a warning if a product contains peanuts?
If it does, then there is nothing wrong with having to recall a product that doesn't have the required labeling.
People get butthurt about things way to much.

I remember taking a peanut butter sandwich into primary school when I was in year four. My parents didn't realise that peanuts were banned at that school and the teachers threw my sandwich away and marched me to the medical room to wash my hands. I was extremely upset.

I send The Boy to school every day with a PB&J. While his pre-school had a strict no-peanuts policy, his elementary school does not.
Now things are different if we want to send in something to share (for a birthday, etc). Can't be homemade, needs to be in sealed packaging, can't be unhealthy, etc.
One of my friend's daughters has a peanut allergy. My brother-in-law has bad reactions to MSG and some artificial sweeteners. I know how to run a clean kitchen, the dangers of cross contamination, and how to read a label. But I've seen some of the yahoos who are barely qualified to be parents at open houses/events/etc. I would not want to put the life of my son in their hands. So I can understand draconian rules for food allergies.
I have fond memories of swapping lunches with my classmates. It gives you a change to mix up your diet and try things you might not normally have access to. Those days are behind us.

I think labelling the product is not unreasonable.
But I do take issue with schools that ban peanut products. If someone is so violently allergic to peanuts, they should either take the risk in public school, or be home schooled. There are plenty of disastrous allergies that do not receive the kind of accommodation that peanut allergies do.

Well, there's that whole suffocation thing... That's fairly common. However, my school has plenty of people with peanut allergies, and over 1200 students. Nobody bothers with banning allergens. They expect the sufferers to have some degree of reason along with the rest of the students (a poor decision in a secondary school, but that's a different subject) and to just say something.
Outright bans are stupid, but I have to admit if somebody didn't know what a monkey nut actually was, it could lead to complications. Peanuts are legumes, not nuts.

Yeah, this is pretty dumb. I mean, Holy gak peanuts contain peanuts!? STOP THE PRESSES.
Also, I've never heard the term "monkey nuts" but all it would take is a even split-second glance at the package to see what they are.
And I say all this as someone who is allergic to them.
