Subject: Tau Battle Brothers Benefiting from Markerlights?

I was hoping to get a helpful answer from YMDC regarding something I have found in the wording of the New Tau Codex, and how the Marker-light's Usage affecting a unit's shooting.
In the Tau Codex it states that whenever a unit from the Tau Codex makes a shooting attack it may spend the Marker-light tokens accumulated on a unit using one of the 3 options listed.
Under Pinpoint - By Spending any number of tokens you may then raise the ballistic skill of all MODELS involved in the shooting attack.
This is just interesting involving placing a tau IC such as a suit commander inside of example a Devastator Squad with Plasma Cannons, and allowing them to severely reduce the scatter, and then also allowing to ignore cover from the spending of marker-lights as well!
Was just curious as to what YMDC felt!

IIRC if an independent character joins a unit he becomes apart of that unit ie DE Archon joining Eldar Harlequins becomes Eldar not DE.
So I'm not sure a Tau Commander joined to Devastators could use the markerlights...at all.

Ah excellent opinion!
So a Space Marine IC would benefit from being inside of a tau unit then?!
Because he would then become a member of the Tau Unit? That would follow the IC rule of them becoming and considered a part of the unit, Granted it couldnt be that useful of a situation with the tables turned but hey it is something!

As far as I can tell, yes.
I don't own the new Tau codex though, I've only read it once or twice. Hopefully someone with some more insight will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.

Only a Codex: Tau Empire unit can decide to use a markerlight and benefit from it's effects.
That said, a ultramarine IC joining such a squad would seemingly benefit from the effect at that point.

The model does not become Eldar(continuing your example), but the unit as a whole remains Eldar.
The DE Model can benefit from effects granted to "A friendly Eldar Unit" while he is attached though(and can ride in the falcon)

They are unable to ride in the falcon as Even Battle Brothers cannot ride in each others transports per the Battle brother and ally rules.

Again all those bullet points are in reference to Allied units, not individual models within a faction unit.

KK, while I agree with you that an attached allied IC can embark into a transport, I think we can all agree that it is at best ambiguous, and should not be stated as fact.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Reading the markerlight rules, I can't see it even being intended any other way. This was done on purpose, no doubt about it.
"All models firing at the target as part of this shooting attack" or "All weapons fired at the target as part of this shooting attack"
They make it clear that only a Tau Codex unit can activate the markerlights, it would have been all too easy to mention this under each individual rule or stipulate only Tau models get the benefit.

Agreed on the markerlights. If you're attached to a Tau unit, you're good.
Happyjew wrote:KK, while I agree with you that an attached allied IC can embark into a transport, I think we can all agree that it is at best ambiguous, and should not be stated as fact.
Agreed. It's ambiguous at best. The phrasing of the prohibition doesn't refer specifically to allied "units"; it could just as easily be read to apply to models, even when attached to a unit from the main detachment.
"However, note that not even Battle Brothers can embark in allied transport vehicles."
I think the RAW could go either way, but the intent is (probably) not to let attached allied characters get in. And since that's the less-powerful interpretation, caution and good sportsmanship point toward using that interpretation until and unless your local TO or GW rule otherwise.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

Not that I want to get into this debate in this thread; but please see my signature's second sentence.
You need to read within the rules of English(many if not all rules in the BRB are written with them), wherein the 1st sentence of a paragraph establishes the subject of the paragraph, all further sentences must be written in regards to this subject; or a new paragraph must be started.
The subject in the first sentence is "Battle brothers", and that same sentence defines that subject as "Friendly units".
Further, one must understand that the bullet points are part of the sentence that contains the colon immediately prior to their listing: "This means, for example, that battle brothers:".
Now, since the bullet points are all further expansions of what Battle brothers mean, and "Battle Brothers" in this paragraph are already defined as "Friendly units" then we can apply those 2 cases: The third bullet point says that even allied friendly units cannot embark in their allies transports.

I disagree. I think Battle Brothers must more comprehensively be read to include all models in the allied detachment, not just when they're in their own units, although that's the predominant case.
