So I went to the Dragon's Maze prerelease tonight for MTG. I was pretty excited because I've never been around for one before and some of the cards from the set seem really awesome.

Well, after waiting in line, getting the boosters, and opening them up to get to work on a deck I realized; "These cards are complete gak." Quite literally, I had a little bit of everything and nothing that could be usefully put together to win a game (not that I really expected to win being so new to the game). I wanted to play an Orzhov deck, but pulled only two useful cards from the prebuilt pack (while the other five people who picked Orzhov all pulled some of the best white and black cards for such a deck). In the end I decided to just pull together some stuff that seemed fun to play and went in for the laughs.

Then when I started playing I basically just sat there and watched the other guy win while doing nothing because other than the lands in my opening hand I pulled none from a deck that was pretty much 45% land and only had 3 for 8-12 turns the entire time.

So basically I had no real fun at all. The whole experience actually became somewhat unbearable. I left after the first match and just went home.

So, what times have you guys done something that in all honesty should have been fun, but for whatever reason became a horrible or boring experience?

Same deal, with the last major release. Sealed deck tourney; I pulled all utility cards and nothing useful (think of crap like Tormod's Crypt). Stll came in 2nd, though.

You could start an entire thread just for "I played sealed/draft MTG and had terrible luck with my packs". Anyone who has played MTG for a decent amount of time has at least one of those stories.

(And this is one reason that local prereleases with 2-3 events over a weekend is a good thing, you can just try again the next day if you get screwed by a bad sealed pool.)

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Honestly I could have dealt with the crappy cards (aside from the Orzhov prebuilt having nothing I'd actually consider Orzhov in it), but it was being mana screwed 2 games in a row in a deck that was nearly 50% mana and drawing nothing but 5 and 6 drops that really got to me.

I was not in a good mood.

If you had such a poor draw leading to no lands, it's simply that the deck hasn't been shuffled sufficiently. It can happen by chance but being your first game that's the likely reason. I don't see that as a reason to go home after one round.

I can't remember the worst mtg event I attended. The WCQs weren't a lot of fun recently. Everyone was using Thragtusks and every deck was largely the same. It really comes to something when the blue-white control deck I faced was the most 'interesting' one of the day. That was disappointing because at the last event I played in London the decks were all varied and everything was different, the current sets are good enough to do this and allow some innovation. But down in Cardiff where I did the WCQ they are still spamming Thragtusks so it was pretty boring playing against the same stuff every round.

Oh I suffled the hell out of it. What I do before suffling any deck is take all the cards put down 3 non-land then 1 land and lay them out then pile them together and start shuffling. I initially had that exact problem a month ago when I started played but this time was just rotten luck.

If I didn't work in 30 minutes and expect to have a completely horrible day I might have stayed but if that was how things were gonna do I'd rather just be home watching tv and bitching on the internet XD

Also I share your hate for thragtusks. Fortunately the local meta is a bunch of people who also hate thragtusks so I don't see them too often XD

What was irritating was that I could have been prepared for Thragtusks if I knew what the local meta was, but I always knew I was going somewhere I don't usually game and there was a risk of the unexpected. In London, Thragtusks were the meta months ago, it's moved on somewhat. In Cardiff they're still widely using them, and I was caught out.

My very first 40k tournament vs IG. Came for fun, faced a static game of, basically, Yahtzee.

I think the most unenjoyable 40k game I ever played was a casual multiplayer game with me as Eldar with an IG partner vs a SM and CSM army team. The game become horrible simply because the CSM player DEMANDED than we measure movement for every individual model (none of that move the guy in front and then just push the rest of his squad up to be with him. The IG guy was playing foot IG at 2000pts per army. It took forever to get anything done and we never finished before (low and behold) CSM guy had to go just as the IG player was about to wipe him off the board.

Yep I had that fun in the last Ice Age prerelease. With what I got the best I could do was make a deck that wouldn't die, but also wouldn't really kill either.

Basically all it could do is when I take 1 damage, I gain 2 life.
Or if I drew the right stuff I could break even and have a 1/1 token guy instead of that second life.

As for 40k, gunline marines and Daemons... But that's more of a learning experience since I really need to get down how to get these flimsy crab claws into combat and still have enough bodies to eat up the overwatch.

Best matches to watch are the ones who are playing and providing the comedy. That to me be our club tyrinid player and our only DE player (I'm 2nd DE player) Pure laughter of mayhem

Things that should be fun but just suck.

1. McDonald's Food- How can you feth up two patties of meat on a sesame seed bun? Too much salt, that's how.

2. 2-Headed Shark Attack- It is a shark, with two heads! Why is it so boring?

3. Facebook- Your Mom has it now.

4. "Dreadnought" by Massie (Non-fiction Book)- Just "Castles of Steel" all over again!

2 Headed Shark Attack was great to watch, we just laughed at how terrible all the acting was as well as the CGI

Went to the Rocky Horror show the other week with a friend and his family, was told it was really entertaining and memorable. Went there and all's I saw were people dancing in ladies underwear, didn't understand what was going on at all...no real plot that made sense or anything...just a load of unfunny confusion and silliness. People laughing en-masse at lines that weren't even remotely funny. < The audience p***** me off the most though, their inane cheering was almost enough to make my ears bleed. Gah!

Yeah...that was supposed to be a fun experience, but it just sucked. Then again musicals in general suck for me, WTF was I thinking when I said yes?

RHPS is only about the audience. Going in your right mind is not helpful.
