So i am looking at playing tau. I started up last year right when the new necron codex came out, and everyone in myplay group told me to go necrons because tau were ulikely to get a new codex any time in the near future. Then lo and behold they did, and so i decided to go with what i wanted to play when i started.

Reading over the codex i noticed a lot of inter-unit synergy in order to increase overall effectiveness. This pleased me because i like using a bit of advanced strategy to win rather then "Derp this cheesy build auto wins?"

So i am going through and i saw 0 units which could hold their own in melee combat. So i though to myself long and hard. "What codex has great melee units, for decent points, which compliment the mobility of the tau?" BLOOD ANGLES! Seeing them get played frequently in my local area, i know how they primarily function.

Since they are allies at convenience, i can use Death Company models to fight because they are non-scoring denial units (? at the very least they can get in melee). With high mobility I can move them on pace with my army, and keep pressure on other armies while my ranged Tau line up and take out other units at range.

What do you guys think of my hypothesis?

It's a good idea.
But don't forget that a DC-model comes without a Jumppack, you need to buy that for almost the entire cost of a model.
Assault Marines are cheaper, but have less of a melee-impact.

You could also use Orks or other melee-armies that are a bit cheaper.

Blood Angels in a nutshell:
Efficent in CC? Yes.
Cheap? No.

BA is propably the most expensive SM chapter (besides GK maybe). Still, DC for example does make a nice impact when assaulting enemy unit. But if you keep them without Jump Packs and in open, the enemy realizes to focus on them and they are dead in turn (or 2 if you're lucky)

Thanks for the tip on assault squads. If i go that rout i get speed mixed with melee more so then dc.

I am still working on ideas for tthe final build, but good advice is always welcome

Additionally, orks have no real saves. As such, i feel as though the tau are better off running ba or other marine assault squads.

Or you can get some grey hunters in a Rhino. Much cheaper, much more efficient.
