Hey all
So, I'm gonna be bolstering my chaos space marine allies. I run daemons as primary, and specifically focus on having fast unit's, either through flying, being slaanesh for the extra run, or most commonly, through using beasts/cavalry for a standard 12 inch movement. I like to get in my enemy's face and hurt them.
However, vehicles, always tend to be a problem for me. A monstrous creature is an expencive way just to crack open vehicles, and i'd much preferr to get them into stuff they kill a little better, namely infantry. This is especially true, when all my monstrous creatures have shooting attacks that work on infantry much much better than vehicles, so to shoot at a vehicle is a waste, but shooting at the infantry means I can't assault and smash the tanks.
As such, I had a dilemma, and I thought this might be solved, though my chaos space marine allies. I run my allies as Typhus with 2 small zombie unit's for scoring purposes, as they are the only models that don't move forward to engage the enemy, they are usually fairly safe.
But i'm going to add a heldrake, for extra fast punch, and I'm thinking, a maulerfiend. On paper, the maulerfiend is cheap, survivable, and with it's 12 inch movement and fleet, it's fast. But is it a terrible option? Or will it give me that threat to enemy vehicles I need, because at the moment, I severely struggle against anything mechanized beyond simply transports. And on the off chance I see a landraider, my only option is to ignore it, which really -really- hurts when it's the flamer variant.
So, 120 point's of maulerfiend mauling tanks, replacing one 10 man pink horror squad? Yay or nay?

If you want one for purely AT, give one a pair of Magma Cutters, but yeah, they work wonders (well, the one time ive seen one used, it wrecked face, so YMMV)

Magma cutters are great, but in all honesty, not really needed..
All around if you want it to just go after Landraiders, sure stick him with the Magma Cutters, but the lasher tendrils mean you can effectively smash him through front lines of nasty infantry like Ork Nobs with PKs and they have a disgustingly terrible time trying to wound you... Not saying it's fullproof but it does help a lot... You're hitting at STR10 anyways so there isn't really any reason not to... The magma cutters are just there to get 1-2 extra hits on thing you should have outright already killed (At least imo)

The only problem is just running one. If you are going to do.that make sure to advance him with other dangerous threads otherwise he is a very large av12 fire magnet. As long as you can prohibit him from being the primary target you can usually count on a 2nd turn assault. I run 3 with my chaos spawn and seeker allies as my assault line and they work great. By the way the lawyer tendrils are not that great in most cases. SM's use krack grenades which is only one each and any decent ork player will put his boyz in B2B and put the nob one rank behind and lashers only affect B2B models. Used correctly Maulerfiends are an excellent source of cheap vehicle killiness.

It's going to be dashing forward with flamers, beasts, flying monstrous creatures, and a whole host of thing's also moving 12 inches

If that's the case then yes it will be an awesome addition to your army. I run mine with seekers, spawn, and jump infantry. Makes them gunlines squeal. Do not assault other walkers though.

I see value in this. Think of it as a cheap counter to most any expensive vehicle.
Could also tie up shooting MCs like a riptide.

I haven't had much success with Mauler fiend to be honest. But maybe my list wasn't suitable for them (it was an assault list). AV 12 on the ground is not that difficult to pop unlike AV 12 in the air. The thing is, Maulerfiends move fast, so they tend to be a priority target, especially since they aren't difficult to kill. If they are the only thing in your army which can kill army reliably and your opponent brings lots of armor, they will be immediately targeted for destruction from turn 1.

If you aren't taking Soulgrinders and starting them on the table, I don't recommend taking one vehicle. If you are, then by all means.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

I also run a soulgrinder, but I run it with the blast, so it rarely if ever target's vehicles. It's ballistic skill of 3 makes it a bad option for anti tank with the tongue attack too.
I also run the flamer chariot which occatonally can rush forward and d3 shot lascannon people if I really need it, but it's much better suited going for infantry.
Thanks all, appreciate the advice
