6e gave us great rules for terrain, but I rarely ever see interesting terrain implemented in battle reports or live games! I think it is a shame, as it can bring interesting dynamics to a game that aren't always present, and interesting terrain is so easy to make!

Mysterious forests and bodies of water are as easy as cutting out construction paper. Positions of battlefield debris like Ammo Dumps, Comms Relays, Statuary, Shield Generators, Tank Traps, and Razor Wire are all easy to make or cheap to buy. Gun Emplacements are particularly interesting, and I plan on making emplacements out of the spare Heavy Bolters and Mortars from my IG heavy weapons squads as MG nests and Mortar pits.

Buildings can bring very substantial changes to the battlefield and invoke new paradigms for army composition and tactics. They are extremely flexible and can also feature things like battlements and neutral weapon emplacements!

So DakkaDakka, how do YOU use non-standard terrain in your games? If you don't, how come?

The key to being able to enjoy the game in real life and also be a member of this online community is to know where you draw the line. What someone online on the other side of the world that you've never met says should never deter you from taking a unit for being either weak or OP. The community is a great place to come for tactics advice, and there is a lot of very sound opinions and idea out there, but at the end of the day, play the game how you want to... Don't worry about the hordes of Dakka descending on your gaming club to arrest you for taking one heldrake or not using a screamerstar. Knowing the standard opinion (and that's all it is) on what is good/bad and conforming to that opinion religiously are two entirely separate things.

Honestly, I wish I had the time to make more terrain to use, but I find I can't even get round to painting the models I have. I suspect I'm not the only one with that problem.

I DO, however, have an interesting Khornate pool of blood. Picked up an ashtray from a car boot sale that was skulls all the way round, with 3 rests for cigarettes to sit on and of course the middle was hollow. I filled that up with milliput, painted the middle red and let it flow out of the cigarette rests, and painted the rest to look like stone. Voila! An objective.

I would like to know where to buy them cheaply or how to make them easily so I could use them in games. I agree that they do, in theory, provide an excellent source of diversity on the battlefield.

Or you can just claim it's all bad luck and you're really the best player in the world if not for those dice and/or cards.

A guy in my gaming group made some awesome mysterious forest bases using leaves from plastic plants from IKEA, gluing them to a few bases. It's like huge leaves growing in a bundle out of the ground.

Problem is, other than me, no one in my group wants to use them as anything but normal forest. Even the guy that made them.

you can see them in the background here:
