When kitted out the standard overlord is a beatstick with few peers. As in most armies don't get special characters that good in melee.

I've only actually used a few in combat so I'll go over those...
Destroyer Lord - The best. I love these guys so hard. If they could take Phase Shifters they would be out of this world.
Overlord - Usually the best choice. You can pick exactly what you need as most of the named Overlords have useless abilities tacked on.
Imotekh - Night Fighting is hit or miss depending on your army and opponent. Lightning is really good at higher point levels but still rather random. Pretty expensive for what he gives to be honest though he has a ton of fun tools.
Nemesor - This guy is feckin' awesome too... sometimes. I often find that my Tactics ability is far less useful then I theorize it to be when I fit him into my list. I can almost never take away any decent abilities in my local meta and Tank Hunters is usually the only one worth a damn to give aside from Furious Charge.

Trazyn is also excellent for trolling blobs. Tyranids in particular fear his ability to wipe out entire broods with one swing.

Does Zahndrekhs phased reinforcements rule work for allies? I can't find a mention of it in the necron faq or the rulebook, and the codex entry states "unit" you control not freindly unit

Pretty much every Necron HQ ranges from good to excellent apart from an obscure named character or two.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.
"Long ago in a distant land, I, M'kar, the shape-shifting Master of Chaos, unleashed an unspeakable evil! But a foolish Grey Knight warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in space and flung him into the Warp, where my evil is law! Now the fool seeks to return to real-space, and undo the evil that is Chaos!" |

Overlords are great, if you have some ground unit to attach him too and/or want some crypteks.
Destroyer lords are great with wraiths and beasts in combat. They are seen a lot in the wraith scythe lists you see floating around.
Nemessor is the man if your ever considering a res orb.
Everything else is just generally worse than those 3, or situational(such as imotek being the best hq hands down in the game in apocalypse).

I have been thinking about tossing in Orikan for his reserve re-rolls... but haven't tried him out yet. Definitely a better option than an ADL and Comm-link, but worth the HQ slot? ...IDK
As far as all of the recommendations others have made... yep I agree. D Lord, OL, and Nemesor are money. The Stormlord can be neat, but he is a touch expensive so you have to kind of build something around him. Though it takes a LOT to kill him off. (especially with his obligatory ChronoTek).
