Hey there dakka, I have been lurking for several months and have only recently worked up the courage to post some images of my Imperial Guardsmen, currently my only army. All images were taken on an iPad camera due to my lack of a real people camera, hence the slightly low resolution, so apologies for that.

My ethos concerning IG painting is that if the models look good from 3 feet away (standing at a table) then they're good to go, but as recently I finally started thinning paints, washing, and drybrushing I figured that it might be a good idea to take some criticism for the more detail oriented stuff.

Where I know I'm weak: I don't base my models (a mix of laziness and preferring to use my imagination as to what my troops are walking on) and I can't paint eyes, teeth, etc.

TL;DR - painty paint

First up are the two Ogryns (of an eventual five) which I currently have painted

Some Catty-chans that I'm using for my Penal Legionnaire squad (my army is Cadian)

Some special weapon guardsmen (I like the bald head guy if you couldn't tell)

Some officers that I usually use for my CCS and PCS, with these the guy on the right is sporting my newest stab (pardon the bad pun) at painting power swords more blue while the guy on the left is sporting one of the old paint jobs, so any input on these photos specifically would be greatly appreciated.

And finally, some vanilla guardsmen bringing up the rear

So, whaddya think?

They look like a good TT standard, but i'd personally make either the trousers or jacket a slightly darker brown, otherwise from a TT distance, it'll just merge into a brown blob. But that is just preference.

That seems like sound advice to me, is there a GW base paint that's a little darker than Zandri Dust (what I currently use as a base on the cloth bits) while not full on brown?

I'm not all too familiar with the GW paints. You could probably get away with one or two layers of Agrax Earthshade wash over the trousers to darken the brown. It would save buying more paint And be relatively quick, if you production line all of your guys

I find that for a basic base ( ), GW's Astrogranite, a wash with Badab Black and a drybrush with Tyrant Skull works well - mind you it is rather plain. You might wanna add some shells etc....
