Frightening Flamer of Tzeentch





So my marines tend to do badly in my games versus a friend playing DE. I have a feeling it's because we don't have a proper gaming table, paired with his over-fondness of named characters (Vect and Cataceract or something like that). Here's the list I most recently used. At the end of the game, his Dias of Destruction still stood unharmed, along with roughly half of his army. We need to start actually counting turns, but as we play casually, he likes to go to the last man. I drafted this in the moment, as we hadn't done a game to these points before and it was fairly improptu.

The tac squad with the razorback is combat squaded, sarge and flamer in the transport, lascannon and co footslogging.
I'll have more models painted and ready in the near future, so I'll list the other models below;

Ven Dread with options for AC, TL LC, PC, and has a heavy flamer on the DCCW

another 5 man scout squad, all CCW with the sergeant having a shotgun and PF

models armed with all the weapons included on the dev sprues to put together a coherent 5 man squad or swap weapons around with the tacticals.

5 more termies, one with an AC and another with a Chain fist (combined AOBR termies with proper kit, didn't have enough straight power fists)

a power armoured libby with a storm bolter

a chaplain with a jump pack

a 5 man assault squad packing a power weapon, a combat shield and a flamer

a stormtalon with skyhammer missiles (not too sure how to use it)

the AOBR captain (usually run as having a Relic Blade and hellfire rounds)

a captain with a PF and storm bolter I could effectively run as Pedro Kantor

a captain with a PW and plasma pistol, and another with a bolt pistol instead

a command squad with champion, banner bearer with PF, a meltagun with a bolter, and the remaining member and apothecary with BB/CCW

I believe that's everything. I can already see that the biker captain should be taken out, his usefulness is limited here. Any other recommendations from more experienced players?

Against DE you lack sufficient ranged firepower to damage him. Something that could help this would be the storm talon.
The captain on a bike is good if you're running a bike army. But seeing as you dont have any other bikes I would loose him. The best HQ choice from what you've got would probably be the librarian. Best to run him with no upgrades.
You can afford to loose calgar. He's a 6th of your army and its hard to punch skimmers...
Tac Squad loadouts are okay, I wouldn't bother with HKs though. Its an expensive way to get one krak shot.
For the scouts, take 4 snipers and the HB.
The dread in the drop pod is flying solo. Its not the best idea since it will often accomplish little. I find the best ways to run dreads are on foot with 2 TL autocannons or in a drop pod as you have, but not alone. You want at least 3 in the army so 2 can come down together.
Sternguard like that on foot can flounder a bit. THe mix of melta and plasma seems a bit strange to me. Normally I run them as straight plasma, or a combination of flamer/melta. For a 5 man foot squad loose, I would take them with 2 lascannons and perhaps 1 combi flamer just in case. Cheap way to get lascannons and the flamers just well... for security.
I'm not so keen on terminators, but they're okay so could leave them as they are.

Loose calgar, get the storm talon with missiles, should leave you with 120ish points still.
Exchange biker captain for regular librarian, 195ish total spare.
Seeing as you only have 1 drop pod, I would exchange it for a riflemen dread, just use the venerable one as it but dont actually field it as venerable (way to expensive). 210 spare
Get 2 lascannons in sternguard. 190 spare.
Could loose the HKs and then if you have another TAC squad chuck that in. With what you've got it could be a bit difficult to get a lot of ranged firepower in. I'd run the librarian with the razor TAC squad probably.

I have been considering getting a dakka pred and the sniper scouts. Perhaps have Cronous in the pred? My friend only has a single Raider (that has been used as a Dias of Destruction) So I don't have many vehicles to shoot at, but may need to deal with AV 13. Alternatively, he has several dark and heat lances, several of them on mobile packages. Also, is a Thunderfire Cannon any good? The rules look nice for turning twiggy DE to paste with 4 blasts.

2 Devastators with 4 HB each.... This shreads infantry and vehicles alike. If you want, add an ADL with quad gun and laugh at him.
