You may have heard this spiel before but it rings true.

Infinity is a game that has huge tactical depth and each model can give your force pronounced nuances. Every faction has thier own strengths and weaknesses that can be exploited by both you and your opponent to varying degrees. It's not a game that you can just "jump in at the deep end". While the basic task resolution system of Infinity is pretty easy to get your head around, as with most skirmish scale wargames the devil is in the details. There is a huge amount of different abilites, equipment and weapons on many differing profiles that will be incredibly daunting to a newcomer.

Put simply you definitely don't want to start at 300 points. If you are a newcomer going up against existing players barring extreme luck or your opponent feeling sorry for you, chances are you will get absolutely stomped. That's not your opponent being nasty, but Infinity is a very deadly wargame where everything can damage everything. Even worse would be both you and your prospective opponents being newcomers and misinterpreting rules and abilites and people becoming disillusioned and quitting due to perceived overpowered abilites/weapons/models.

In reality what you should do is get (or proxy) 150 points of models from your preferred faction. This doesn't have to be the starter set (I myself didn't start my collection with one) but ideally you want about 6-7 models in your force while obeying the restrictions on Points, AVA and SWC. Play at least 5 games or until you feel comfortable with the basic rules and abilites and then increase your game sizes by 50 point increments. Once you get to 250 points I would recommend that you start using missions/scenarios as "kill 'em all" will soon get very boring and maginalises a lot of the more subtle happenings in Infinity. I can almost guarantee that this will give you a better gaming experience than trying to start at the highest points level half-cocked.

The other thing to remember is that in Infinity, terrain is king. You're going to need a lot of terrain, I'm talking at least 50% coverage on a 4'x4' board. You shouldn't be able to draw uninterrupted LOF further than 32", preferably less. Fortunately due to the recent surge in the popularity of Infinity there are plenty of good options available to you, check out the terrain thread in this subforum.

Last but by no means least. Infinity is a game that promotes the aesthetic of using models that you like. As I said before everything can damage everything. Some models either due to abilities, weaponry or something else may be better in certain contexts but there is nearly always a chance no matter how slim that your big, badass dude can be taken out by a lowly line trooper. Infinity really is game that is more about how you use your force as opposed to what's in it. Force composition is still an important element, but it is no where near as pervasive as in other wargames.

Infinity is a dense, complex game that will be very daunting to a newcomer. But if you take your time and incrementally ease your way into it, you will soon find that it is one of the most rewarding, balanced and well made wargames that's around.

H.O.E.C.S games make your child smell like hammers.

That being said, I encourage you to visit the official forums either the spanish or the international one and ask for advices in list building, but keep in mind you should start with a 150/200 pts list.
