So...pretty frakking crazy right?

Well, hear me out, if you would be so kind. The basic Necron ally force here would be Imo+Chrono+5 by Warrriors+Night Scythe. Imo's shenanigans aside, you're getting some anti-air, and a versatile (can be placed virtually anywhere) and relatively resilient scoring unit (largely because Imo+Chrono eats bullets for breakfast) for about 430 points.

Now to the crazy. So Imo hits allies. That's a non-starter for many, however with the Chrono you can significantly minimize the damage to your own units. Basically, roll for you "favorite" or most important units first, use the Chrono to re-roll the first 6 you get, and generally speaking your most important 3 or 4 units every turn should be relatively safe. On top of that, you can specifically take units that aren't particularly worried about the lightning if they happen to get dinged. Non MSU Firewarriors and Kroot for instance. Riptides. Neither one of these units is particularly phased by a lightning strike. Also, by going with as few units as possible (within reason) you can further mitigate any return damage you get from this deal with the robotic devil.

But why would you even bother? What do you gain from this nefarious bargain? Well, for one, considering your army will be built to minimize the impact of the lightning, and the opponents army will not, plus you'll be protecting your own forces with the Chrono (if needed) while maximizing the damage done to them with the Chrono (if not needed to protect your own), so the net impact of the lightning alone should favor the Tau. More importantly however, you give any army that has long range shooting in droves and that basically ignores Nightfighting, 3 to 5 turns of....Nightfighting.

Think of the potential here. Hammerheads/Fish/Skyrays with 0+ and 2+ cover saves. Firewarriors/Kroot with 2+ cover behind the aegis. Etc, etc. So, what could an army like this look like? Could you make it worth it? I honestly think the combo, as crazy as it is, screams with some tantalizing potential.

Nothing new, was thought of about 2 days after 6th edition came up with allied chart, got piled in the "cool but impractical" bin for being less effective then simply playing pure necron imohtek, they hardly care about night fight anyway considering their short ranges.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

The main issue is that alot of tau armies include the 1k death star ....

They pretty much drop the remain points on a Rip tide and scoring units.

Sure, in the context of the old book. This is a new book, with different mechanics, and different ways of working to minimize the negative impact of Imo, and maximize the positive. The changes to Kroot, Firewarriors, Riptide, Skyray, Hammerhead, and DPods (which now stack with both Stealth and Shrouded) alone I think warrant new attention on this.

The main issue is some entirely different builds bring different things?

Added that there for you (just to emphasize it), to me the prevalence of markerlights that ignore cover is what makes this potentially scary and more viable now. You will be getting all of the benefits of night fighting, while your opponent will be getting none. If you can "alpha shoot" your opponent in the turns of night fighting they won't have much left when it clears to shoot back, and most of your army will still be alive. I'd be curious to see some lists and battle reports on it though...

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
