CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT!

So here's the Guard I'm currently running. Generally I have my heavy artillery target their armor and heavy units while the platoons move forward in three blobs of 20 and grab objectives. It's okay, but I feel like it still needs tuning.

HQ 65pts

CCS: Regimental Standard

Troops 680pts

Platoon 1:
HWS - 3x Lascannons
IS - Meltagun
IS - Meltagun
IS - Meltagun
IS - Meltagun
PCS - 4x Plasma guns

Platoon 2:
HWS - 3x Autocannons
IS - Meltagun
IS - Meltagun
PCS - 4x Grenade Launchers

Heavy Support 740pts:

Leman Russ Squadron:
Leman Russ Demolisher (Heavy Bolter Hull)
Leman Russ Demolisher (Heavy Bolter Hull)

Manticore (Heavy Bolter Hull)

Ordnance Battery:
Basilisk (Heavy Bolter Hull)
Basilisk (Heavy Bolter Hull)

TOTAL: 1485 points

So what do you guys think? The past few games I've been running, I've held my own alright, but not much had to go against me to bring it all crumbling down. It's winning more, but not by much, and I wanna change that.

I'd start by swapping those HWSs for weapons upgrades in the platoon squads themselves. Or dropping them entirely so that you can spend more points on more armor.

On a similar note, I wouldn't run both russes and artillery. I'd stick with one or the other. 5 demolishers or 6 medusas is going to be a lot scarier than a few of each.

Does your gaming group run forge world at all. The Earthshaker Gun Platform is a cheaper version of the Basilisk. For 150pts you can get a squad with 2 Earthshakers or 125 for the Basilisk. Not sure how you run a Bassy but if I ever run them they tend to stay still so the Gun Carriage tends to be a better option. If Medusa guns float your boat you can upgrade one for 25pts with the Medusa Cannon.

Logical more than 4 lemun russes scare anyone in a 1500 point army. If you like the idea of shock and awe invest in Creed with his counter-attack ability. Perhaps a valkarie to drop some veterans down ?

I would keep the HWSs and deploy as far back from the action as possible , maybe with a PCS to shielded and order them; but give the PCS an autocannon.

Keep the squads mass 24" fire to target upto T6 things with their mass fire.

If possible I would fill out the Basalisk battery with a griffon. Nice cheap ordanance template, hordes don't care if they are hit with AP4 or AP2; just as long as they are hit. If you changed one demolisher to a basic LRBT that'll almost pay for one of the basilisks to be made into two griffons. The heavy support dfinitely needs tweaking to make the most of it - don't forget that the batteries need to target the same thing which may be a little overkill with some smaller elite units - the CCS doesn't appear up to much so this could be filled out with a master of ordanance allowing you to consider dropping a tank and getting an ADL to hide behind (you don;t have any air support at the moment).

There's a guy in my group who runs Krieg with the IA books, FW isn't an issue. We don't really have flyers though, but I think I'll look into Jasper's suggestions. Creed is also pretty tempting. I'll definitely be doing some tweaking, I've found my Heavy Supports are really the ones I need to look at most, my infantry have been performing about as expected.

FYI this is not a foot guard list, you have half of your points in tanks and mobile artillery.

If you like template you might want to check for some artillery IG list.

Grab two platoons and at least an ADL to protect all your artillery. Check Imperial Armour Volume 1 - Second Edition for your artillery. You will fields a lot more and be more efficient.

CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT!

I figured with 75 men in 3 different blobs and no transports it's pretty footguard-like.

I might be mistaken, I was basing it off some other lists I've seen. It might be artiguard.

Freakazoitt, I might not be foot guard, but you don't have to completely ignore the Heavy Support choices to be footguard.

I understand what you mean but from my point of view a foot-list would be almost 100% guards on foot and no tanks and artillery. If that's the case if would just be a regular guard list.

Have fun

I would say foot guard are where there are no transports, russes etc are an option. Infantry guard or something would be where there's no vehicles of any description. Other than whats already been said, I'm not such a fan of kitting out PCSs with a heap of expensive guns. That plasma PCS costs a bit and doesn't take a huge amount to wipe out.

If your attack is going too well, you have walked into an ambush

CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT!

Maybe GLs instead? less expensive and they can still do something more than "be a 5-man guard squad"

I think a mix of vehicles and foot guard is called a Hybrid List.

CCS: Regimental Standard

This is a wasted opportunity. You paid for BS 4 models, at least give them a gun. I think a Lascannon might be in order here. Twin linked BS4 is a cheap way to threaten vehicles.

I think plasma guns in a PCS is an expensive overkill. Mabye give them flamers or GL and find points to add a second CCS with Plasma. BS 4 for the win, and extra orders for all those squishy men.

I look at this squad and think, leman russ are sooo slow. Medusa have longer range... and are cheaper. Save the points get an ADL.

If you were fielding Medusa and If you wanted an anti-horde compliment instead of str 9 guns firing at t4 5+ saves or worse maybe griffon are better here. It limits your options but frees up a lot of points to add men to the foot legions which themselves are a credible threat to vehicles.

This, very much this. Autocannon HWS are bearable, as they are cheap, but when you give them lascannons they get shot once and run. Too tempting a target.
