Guys,

Just a quick one,

Me and a friend get our gaming fix only once a week, so we have a large game, usually 4k-5k, which gives us a good 5-6 hour game.

We don't mind smaller games, but we often find that as we don't play too often, we can swap our tactics quite a bit and we still get a pretty good game in.

Do you guys prefer these longer games, or do you prefer smaller 1500 - 2000 point games and why?

Large games really need moderation when multiple players are involved, or people just become bored and the game ends up stopping on turn 3 or something. This is all, just my opinion.

The biggest indicator someone is a loser is them complaining about 3d printers or piracy.

You are a lucky person to get a game in once a week. When I played on a regular basis myself and three friends each played 2 games at 2k points

We usually play on a Tuesday afternoon/evening on our rota days off work, then spend a week discussing the last weeks game.

As there's only two of us, it makes for a pretty quick game, although when playing 4.5k or more, we tend to use an 8"x4" board

That sounds fun.

Probably, the problem with me and these games is I've only played them at GW, and every time people just drop off like flies. They are so badly organised, with no limits or restriction. Balance is thrown out and the window and chaos ensures.

I like smaller games myself. Maybe 1000 points. Gives it a more skirmish-y feel

The bigger games get confusing calculating wounds, remembering orders, constantly checking the rules it takes really really long. Plus I have a short attention span

Back when I played in Third ed the club I went had regular 15k points a side games. Three or four guys a side. On maybe a 12x14 board. Lasted better part of a day, but was an amazing display of force and models. Was hella fun.

I have trouble getting into small games.

Longer games? Do you play more than 5-7 turns?

Not all of us measure time in turns, but rather in a measure of durations of events and the intervals between them.. Playing from 10:00 to 22:00 is a long game, even if it was only 3 turns.

I massively prefer smaller games either in the 600pts range or 1500-1850 range. I find they're far more interesting tactically, rather than just rolling 4kpts worth of dice.

Have you tried playing multiple small games in the same time? Bringing various lists to use in each game - or even different armies if you have them.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

We don't really measure in turns, in fact, we've had games ranging from 5 turns through to 10 turns.

We generally play just really large regular 40k games, but sometimes throw in the odd apocalypse game.

I don't mind smaller games, but having 6k plus worth of models, i find myself limited choosing only 1,000 points. I don't mind them when I'm limited for time, but when we plan on playing for 4+ hours, and having a beer or two, then we prefer the larger games.

At some point though, we have said we plan on a 6k per side game.

1-1.5k games. Cause my armies usually don't get much bigger than 1.5k and they're fast enough.

If you've got an afternoon/evening set aside, a really big game can be a lot of fun. I won't say I prefer a big 4k game, but once in a while they can be a lot of fun.

From a gameplay perspective, I don't think the game was designed to efficiently simulate more than 2500 point games. A player's turn just drags on and on
and you spend a good hour or so doing nothing but watching him roll dice and remove models.

If I was to play a 4k game, I'd divide each army into two forces (2k each) and during each turn you can choose to activate either one. Once that force moves and shoots, the opponents' 2k moves and shoots, then your other detachment, and then the opponent's, so each player can move and shoot/assault twice each turn. You only fight assaults in your activations, however, so essentially a game with four armies with each player playing two.

I guess this has got to depend on who youre playing. I think it needs to be close friends so while youre playing you can talk and just hang out.

As for the large games me and my group tend to play 2v2 games which we find lends it self well too 2k points a person (1999+1) so 4k a side and a total of 8k point game. we have lots of fun. The best part is generally the story line for these large epic battles

1500 has been our "go to" for years. 12 years ago, we kept it at 1499 just cause the Nid players would use Old One Eye and The Red Terror if we did not.
Since then we keep it at 1000 or more, we tried 500 points and it just didn't do it for us.
We used to play 1500 points her person, 2 vs 2 games. That was fun we used 6 by 12 table (but then we would set up a table with say a Mountain in the middle with caves on each side, and set up a second table of the same size with the "inside" of the hill...if you walked out the left side of the hill on the inside, you came out on that side on the other table.)
2500 would draw out (time wise) at times, but then we got bored and turned a basement into a "game room" with tables, mini frig, TV, book shelves of books, big chairs, snack bar and stuff. So we could play for a full weekend, even if it was one game. But we noticed, after a long game (time wise not turn) we would be tired, cranky, and just ready to stop. But if we played smaller games, we could do best 2 out of 3.
Big games seemed like a reason to use two over cost HQ Characters and nothing more.

At my place we generally play 1500-2K. But every other month, we do a bring what you got battle, generally 2 players per side, up to 10K per side. and yes we generally have to use apoc rules for it.

I often play "no points, just fill out that double FOC" games. They can be hella fun and quite often absolutely hilarious as things you'd never see in a normal game get dragged out to play.
