Hey Dakka, I'm looking to perhaps run some Big Guns Imperial Guard alongside my Orks. They can plug some serious weaknesses in the Ork list (no long ranged anti-armour 14, no decent AP3, lack of pie plates, not much propa AA) and if I fluff them as just 'looted IG tanks' they'll be cheap as anything to scratch build.

Looking for a competitive list, but I don't mind running a bit of junk in there too - Penal Legions, Deathstrike Missiles, and so on look too fun to pass up. However, I do want to keep infantry to the barest minimum, since they'll be represented with Gretchin or Orks of some kind and it could get confusing really quickly.

Not really interested in running Vendettas. Maybe if I had the time to build a roight propa Orky bomma for it, but until then, theres enough of those things floating around at my club as it is.

These are the units that come to mind as being the most useful or fluffy at first glance;

HQ
-Command Squad w/ Master of Ordinance [another AP3 pie plate], Master of the Fleet [slows down incoming air support]
-Techpriests [Mekboys, for fixing up my vehicles]

Elites
-Marbo [Finally get to put that Snikrot model of mine to good use!]
-Ratling Snipers [Grot Snipers? Finally]

Troops
-Penal Legion [Fluff them as Blood Axes - dem weird Orks dats spend to much time around da 'umies - or as some particularly ruthless Gretchin]

Heavy Support
-Squadron of 3x Basilisks, or possibly other big guns (this one looks the most fearsome)
-Manticore
-Deathstrike Missile

Thoughts? Which units are worth using and which are not? Whats going to best complement Orks in general - say, a Green Tide with loads of boys or massed Battlewagons?

If BW, take AV14. The saturation is nice.

If massed Boyz, I'd take a power blob, just to really mess with your opponent.

Vendettas are always nice. Manticore and Griffon are two heavies I think are quite good.

The Manticore I understand (that thing is nuts), but why the Griffon over the Basilisk? To me, someone with no experience playing as this army, it looks much worse?

Also, what is a power blob with this army?

Cheers

Well you need more troops because the force chart says

1 HQ
2 Troops

-Ratlings are a great concept, midgets who can magically come from cover anywhere from the battlefield and snipe enemies....with lasguns
-Penal legion ? base cost is more than veterans and can do less than veterans honestly just get veterans, dem strange orki hangin around dem humies know how to shoot !

Some people prefer the other artillery choices such as the medusa or griffon to the basilisk. Griffon has a range of 12"-48", S6, AP 4, with the same type as a basilisk. IMO I would prefer the higher AP 4 of the griffon than the AP 3 of the basilisk however getting models of these are quite hard so you pretty much have to scratch build them from a chimera or basilisk model.

It's an allied detachment, only 1 HQ and 1 Troop is needed unless the IG are an exception?

Every vehicle will be scratch built in the same style as my "generic Ork vehicle fleet" - dollar shop tanks with spiky bits and random gubbins all over them. They even have those little momentum engine things in them that you can rev up and watch them drive around =P ... so price of models and such is no object here.

Penal Legion will be like my one exception to the rule with competitiveness. They're crap and I know they're crap, but they're also so damn cool.

With regards to the Griffin vs the Basilisk, we've got
>better accuracy
>S6, AP4
>shorter minimum and maximum range

Against
>standard accuracy
>S9 AP3
>very long minimum and maximum range

I think in my case, since Orks are lacking in long range shooting against MEQs and vehicles, the Basilisk would be better. I seriously can't see why the Griffon would be the preferred choice... is that re-roll to hit really *that* good? Or alternatively, is the 36" minimum range of the Basilisk enough to make it practically useless? Or is it something else I'm missing?

Seems like if you're trying to fill the void in an ork army a basilisk is a better choice. A large squad of lootas seems like a more effective option than a griffon. And ranged str 9 is something orks lack and would make a huge difference vs AV14.

Yeah, Lootas can do it all... except AV 14. I imagine whatever I'm firing though, it'll be hitting rear armour (with the help of Deffkopta spotters that is), so S9 isn't strictly essential

Oh this is an allied detachment....nevermind my words all is good , anyway 3 griffons can be just as good as basilisk it just depends on the playsize anyway good list bringing the best out of the IG, artillery

Griffons are extremely cheap and get to reroll scatter dice and take the best roll so they're also very accurate.

Yeah Griffons are crazy cheap for 75 and accurate.

Power blob is a giant squad of Guardsmen (50) with Power Weapons.

An Earthshaker Gun Carriage is only 75pts as well and does the same thing as a Bassie. It can also be converter quite easily. Also being Artillary is has no Armour Value so won't explode and kill nearby troops and can go to ground for a 2++ behind an Agies line. The big advantage is that it can recieve orders as it is a non-vehicle model.

I have wanted to set up a Digga allied detachment for my ork army for awhile now and have a Kommisar Ork in the Blob. I feel Sabre Guns would add a lot to what an Ork Army is missing and with a Digga unit there helping would be kind of fluffy.
