I just wanted to start a discussion about dice, what sort of dice do you prefer etc, i'm thinking of throwing all my dice out and getting a fresh batch of matching chessex dice in a variety of colours... also one specific question i want to throw out there, what do people prefer dice with numbers printed on them or dice with pips?

pips, small size, and each person in my group has a different colour. Mine are purple.

Also, they have to be loaded, obviously.

Seriously though, keeping yourself to one colour that no one else has makes for less "is this my die?" moments.

I also stay with a dark colour die with bright pips or a bright die with dark pips. And I stay away from the oily-coloured die that shift in colours as they are from time to time hard to read at a glance.
For the scatter die, I like something slightly larger, like the size you get n regular board games.

I got mine from here, and I am very happy with the feel of them.
And, you know... 4 pounds for close to all my dicing needs. Can't complain.

I have a rather large collection of dice. Between MtG, my old days of D&D, and of course 40k.

For playing 40k I usually just use a few small 36 d6 dice blocks of different colours with the pips. I also have a bunch of the scatter dice that came with BfM, AoBR and DV, as well as one of the GW dice tins.

I just purchased and received 15 precision dice from gamestation.net. I've hated my GW dice since I bought them and after reading a few different articles showing different studies to find the most accurately random dice precision dice or "Vegas Dice" proved to be the most statistically correct. And then for good measure and because I'm tired of rolling ones for my 2+ anything rolls I went and made a custom open topped felt layered box with which to roll my new (Expensive) dice into so that one I don't lose them and two I have a more randomised Vegas style type of rolling area instead of a cardboard box that the dice just land on and slide without ever really rolling. I guess you could say I went a little bit beyond over the top with my dice...

I have loads of different kinds of dice, but I'm kind of partial to my casino style dice. Got them in a bunch of different colors a while back...but I'm still looking for them since moving two years ago.

I also have some of the Crystal Caste crystal style D6s that I use for my Eldar.

Those are the only dice that particularly stand out, though.

I don't recall where I got them from, exactly - some eBay shop account - but, these are mine.

Well - more specifically, my girlfriend's. She collects and paints, but doesn't play, and these are the byproduct of a failed attempt to get her more interested in the gaming. But I've taken to using them more because they won't get confused with anyone else's, and I always get comments on them.

I prefer bright dice with dark pips/numbers. Although I have some 6 sided d3s that are solid colors with white numbers that work well

I also don't use the 36-dice blocks because I feel the dice are too small. I like some weight to what I'm rolling.

Square edged dice, no matter what. I don't like how much round ones bounce, roll, and feel in my hands. Koplow makes great ones. I also like getting dice for each army I have, so my Valhallans have a ton of WW2 Soviet-themed dice from some company.

I prefer sharp edge dice over rounded edge (and corner) dice, due to the way they roll. Lucky, I have a case of Bicycle dice blister packs for tourneys.

On a fixed income *pocket money...* I don't have the money to buy a set of dice from gamesworkshop and I just don't see them anywhere else. So I usually have to use the stores, do you find that your own dice helps?

Also, whenever someone says pips I double check to see if they said Pimps Lol

I bought a pack of the GW dice (with the scatter dice) that comes in a little pack that is easy to pack. All I needed, but I got the Lasgun power pack and dice when I seen it.
I never needed extra dice, but if I did, I have a ice chest that is the shape and size of a Knight's helmet, that flips open on the top. I have it full of dice (since I owned a game store and was able to buy "A pound of dice" for like $3, and I had a case with all of the cubes and tubes of glow in the dark, or glitter dice sets.

I use Koplow word number dice. Instead of pips or numerals the faces are printed with the words "one" "two" "three" "four" "five" and "six." Though they aren't precision dice they are larger and squarer than Chessex gaming dice. Similar to numerals, the engraved words are shallower and less uneven than drilled pips. Aside from personal preference the advantage of this sort for me is that nobody else uses them so I can tell my dice apart from others instantly.

Koplow also manufactures conventional and specialty dice. I rate them as solidly middling quality, cheaper than Gamescience precision dice and better made than Chessex supercheap dice.

I am sorry man, I hate playing with or against the GW 40k dice. The 5 and the 2 look almost identical and I have had many a fight over someone picking up a "5" that I thought was a "2". Small pips are the best way to go because no one miss reads them.

But for the most part there is no right or wrong dice. Bright unique colors help a lot when trying to track down your dice but you will want more than one color for when you roll with mixed weapons or when you character rolls. Just look around and find ones you like.

Pips for sure. I like small dice for 40K since we consistently roll many (especially orks!). As for color schemes, I prefer to use colors that not many other players use as to easily to them apart. Therefore, I have many different colored sets hanging around.

I have an absurd amount of dice in my dicebag. For good reason too.

I keep 30 black with white dots, 24 grey with black dots, 10 white with black dots, 2 yellow with black dots, 2 scatter die.

D4. D8, D10, Dsomething?, D20, and a large numbered D6.

All for a reason, the random Dx dice are occasionally used as objectives, and for rolling some of those random disputes that crop up. Large D6 for pre-game stuff, and those important rolls. Black with white are my usual more common dice. Grey with black are for my Scatter laser walkers (they shoot 24 shots, and counting them out is tedious) 10 white are for character/different shots, and the yellow are for my different-different shots.

I haz a big dicebag. All chessex. And all fit the colourtheme of my army. Black/White/Grey.

You can't spare like $5 for a set of dice? They're honestly one of the cheapest parts of this hobby. I don't like using store dice, for obvious reasons they just don't feel "mine" like the rest of my army does.

Maybe it's just years of playing D&D, but I'm kinda superstitious when it comes to dice. I have to have my own, otherwise I feel like I'm gonna get someone else's bad luck (my own bad luck is OK)

Also, not too big a fan of square edge dice. I want lots of bouncing and rolling to convince me that the result was fate and not just a product of how they left my hands.

There's a special relationship between a gamer and his dice. I take care of them and they take care of me. My Purps (my purple dice set) roll better for me than other dice, I find myself believing. It's not that they all roll 6es, they roll what I need when I need it, or atleast they attempt to. I can't fault a good attempt.

To be honest, I have a wide range of dice. Some have dots, others have numbers, some are small, and some are huuuuuuuuge (okay, not huge, but normal sized). I just keep them in a box and name my favorites "Winny". Just roll with what you're comfortable with. If you play a race with a ton of dice rolls (orks?) then the cubes of small dice may be best for you! Just make sure you find "Winny".

Personally I find its really helpful to have a bunch of different coloured dice, so you can roll them all together and tell apart special and heavy weapons etc; for example, with a tac squad you could use white dice for bolters and one or two green dice to represent a plasma gun etc.. saves a lot of time and helps the game run much smoother!

Square edged dice with no pips. I.e. Precision or Vegas. Anecdotal, but I've definitely noticed a difference in rolls!
