Subject: Heavy Gear Blitz- Finally toedipping into "that one game"

Heavy Gear blitz for me has always been "that one game". But finally getting my hands onto some tactics era gears, I thought i would actually give it a go. So I downloaded gear garage, went through the books and came up with this. My aim was twofold, make a list that could be modular across points ranges without having to shelve whole sections just for a points change, and to use what I have without having to buy up whole more sections. Namely, I have a Kodiak, an assault grizzly, a grizzly, a headhunter, two strike Jaguars, two assault hunters and two hunter-paras. The list will most likely only be used for one off games and painting fun, so i'm unsure how well the game works with proxying (at a glance the only difference between a hunter and a commando-hunter is a bit extra armour which should only take some plasticard to replicate the idea of?). Anyway that in mind here we go.
EDIT: Gear garage apparently doesn't translate well to Dakka.
100TV PL4
Veteran Strike Squad (Army Commander) 520TV
Kodiak Conqueror- LD3, Att/Def 3 (2 actions), +1 LD (ArmyCMD), +1Deff(ArmyCMD)
Grizzly- Att/Deff3, Link MRPs, Autopilot
Grizzly- Att/Deff3, Link MRPs, Autopilot
Jaguar- Field Armour, Att/Def 3
Hunter- Att/Deff 3
Veteran Airborne Squadron 355TV
Jaguar-Att/Def3
Hunter Para- Att/Def3
Hunter Para- Att/Def3
Hunter Commando- Att/Deff 3
Hunter Commando- Att/Deff 3
Veteran Infantry Platoon 120TV
Infantry Squad Leader (1st Section)- Riley M221, Infantry Skill 3, Paratroopers
Infantry Squad (1st Section)- Riley M221, Infantry Skill 3, Paratroopers
Infantry Squad (2nd Section)- Riley M221, Infantry Skill 3, Paratroopers
Infantry Squad (2nd Section)- Riley M221, Infantry Skill 3, Paratroopers
Not entirely sure about the infantry, where's the concensus on infantry special weapons? Figured the strike squad can lay down initial beatstick cover fire, the airborne gears can come down as a strike force and make pests of themselves in any gap that opens up, and the infantry can be dropped in onto the battlefield close to a building or objective. All I need to add are the Infantry and a northern weapons pack (Or blitz general weapons pack? Not entirely sure). I have a few points leftover, not fully sure where to spend them. The headhunter will be the strike section's hunter, and the two assault hunters I will tinker with a bit and make them look more commando. Thoughts?

Cool, heavy gear blitz is a great and deep game. The list id OK, though a strike squad can always use Arrow Jaguars (AGM). As for infantry, use rockets or antigear rifles, or grenade launchers or mortars. The Riley 221 kinda blows.

No, gear garage (while a great program and free!) doesn't translate well here to dakka's posts. I suspect the code is optimized for whatever software DP9 uses for their forums. You've got the basics quite well covered (att/def3, twin MRPs, etc) but I'd probably advise against paratroopers. They felt personally very gimmicky when I tried them twice and they put a lot of pressure on the remaining parts of my army during the two turns they were gone (the earliest you can bring them in is the very end of turn 2 so effectively turn 3). In the meantime, the other half of my army was effectively fighting 2 v 1 in threat value while waiting for them to arrive. I could see dropping in infantry being more effective as you won't miss those points as they tend to be pretty cheap. Luckily for me, one of the two games I played involved a full stealth unit which no one could see so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Are you going with a para unit because you have those models handy in your recent loot drop or because you really like them or their rules?

Using the Para's because I have them. I posted the list over at DP9's forum and had it pointed out that only so much of my CG's could be reserved, so it's likely going to be the infantry getting airdropped rather than the airborne section, and short of just using them as a fancy looking GP squad looks like they're going to just be starting on the ground with the Strike Squad most of the time.
The updated list stands at:
Veteran Strike Squad (AC) -545TV
Thunder Jaguar-LD+1, Field Armour, AC LD+1
Kodiak Conqueror- Att/def3. HBZK
Grizzly- Att/def3,Link MRPs, Autopilot
Grizzly- Att/def3,Link MRPs, Autopilot
Hunter-MBZK, Att/Def3
Veteran Airborne Squad -355TV
Thunder Jaguar
Para Hunter- Att/Def3
Para Hunter- Att/Def3
Hunter Commando-Att/Def3
Hunter Commando-Att/Def3
Infantry Platoon- 100TV
Infantry Leader Section 1- Paratroopers, Anti Gear Rifle, Demodrone
Infantry Section 1- Paratroopers, Anti Gear Rifle, Demodrone
Infantry Section 2- Paratroopers, Anti Gear Rifle, Demodrone
Infantry Section 2- Paratroopers, Anti Gear Rifle, Demodrone
Had it pointed out to me that squad leaders in this are a little different to other games, and better spent co-ordinating. So the Kodiak got swapped down a notch to focus on being the beatstick.
In all honesty the Strike Squads there as it lets me field both the Grizzlys and more importantly the Kodiak, the Kodiak is easily one of my favourite models from the line and what first made the game stick in my head. The airborne gears are there simply because i have the parahunters, and a pair of regular assault hunters i should be able to convert a bit into commandos. if there's a better place for the im welcome to hear it.

Yeah, I use my CGLs as electronic warfare specialists usually instead of the more 40k-ish beatsticks personally. If at all possible, I try to put my army commander in something with ECCM to prevent his actions from being easily blocked. That's not an easy thing for the north to do but you can make up for it by taking a cheetah for the AC with some of the league rules (can't remember which one at the moment though). With def +2, he'll be very difficult to hit in cover at combat speed and the native bonuses he gets for sens/comm will help a bit with EW stuff.

True, but a cheetah will be an option for much further down the line. If a game can make GW prices look reasonable then it's not really a "let's by a little of everything when you just start" kind of thing. Tis why I'm attempting to build this first list from what I have with minimum additions, as it stands all that needs adding is a nothern weapon pack and a box of infantry.

I wouldn't call them reasonable necessarily if you look at their resin prices but you seem to have certainly gotten a very reasonable deal (free!). The barrier to entry though is lower than GW games but that is largely due to the smaller model counts. 750-800TV is the average game with a fair amount of people playing the next step up/down from that (500, 1000) but not much more than that.

True, paying £30-40 for a squad box hurts less when you only have to do it once rather than 4 times. My original hope was to get this list as close to "modular" as I could, so i can bump it straight between TV ranges as neatly as possible with the minimum of tweaks. First armies for this game seem to be recommended as something like that, figure out what you need in a list before buying. I may think of adding the cheetahs in at a later date, but for now I'd like to focus my limited model money towards a block of infantry and the weapon upgrades to bring the Tactics gears up to date.
As far as a lower level points force, I was thinking the 500TV list at least can be the Strike squad with a few tweeks.
Short of this I may just go the smaller entry option and use them for Heavy Gear arena, and either make a few teams worth of northern gears or sell the surplus off. Probably be easier to get the locals playing at any rate, I only know one other local who even knows OF the game

Please, join the official forum at DP9 and post your army list there. I am not familiar with the North. So, I can't suggest much. Besides, I have to re-enter everything onto Gear Garage to bring up your full list. At 1000TV PL4, I don't believe that you have any unit with a high detect rating. HGB is not like other games such as 40K. Indirect fire dominates the field. If you cannot detect, you can't shoot. On the other hand, your enemy with a high detect rating will pick you off easily.
Finally, I am glad that you support Teramyyd as well.
