Has anyone ever tried to make a variant as though the Battle was happening in trenches/tunnels?

Obviously in tunnels barrage/salvo weapons would be useless. Anyone have ideas on other rules?

Maybe for trench warfare you would have to make a leadership test prior to jumping up and out of the trenches? Add +1 to strength if charging down into the trenches?

Any other suggestions?

Man i remember a really cool fantasy table that had a tunnel built in to the side of a table. i think it was a gamesday table or something

you could make it so models in a tunnel are in single file and must travel in that manner for wound allocation.

I've played a tunnel battle before. Basically, everyone at the store played a game with a special mission, where the person who won was the person who got the most of their units down the entrance into the tunnel.

Then there was a separate game wherein whatever people got down into the tunnels showed up on the turn it went into the tunnel in the first game.

In our case, we had it where only infantry units could go down into the cave system, and blast weapons, after they scattered, drew a straight line between the firer and the end position of the blast and had it explode wherever it hit a wall.

Kind of neat. Gave me lots of excuse to bust out photoshop for the narrative side of the battle report.

You may wish to check out Zone Mortalis, its a blasty blast, makes flamers and blasts hyper lethal in the close quarters.

It also lets you do coridoor battles in space ships and the like

Cheers for that, been wanting to run some spaceship boarding scenarios and had no idea how to pull it off.

We had a game where we set up two tables together (giving us double the space) then a second set of tables. There were cave/tunnels in a large hill in the center of the table. If you walked in, you entered the second set of tables, which had a maze like area the same size as the hill on the other table, and exits that lined up with the other table, to re-enter the above ground board.
They map was a surprise, so I showed up with Basilisks, which didn't help at all, but IG with flamers in a tunnel fight did pay off.

Back in DDWWC 1 i played a massive battle with Eldar/DE against Orks.

The Orks had to storm across the battlefield, force the gates and get into the tunnels below, then fight along them to the generator room to win the game, or be wiped out trying..

It was a blast! Great game, though without the Pizza, Beer and Caffiene angels (wives ) it would never have happened.

I think i still have the batrep saved somewhere. I'll try to find it when i have a mo.

Tunnel battles can be a lot of fun, because they force a different playstyle. CC troops, flamers etc are more potent, and longer ranged troops are at a disadvantage, which makes things interesting...

You could also play space hulk, of course

I'd love to build a table with opposed, WWI or II style trenches. Wouldn't really be practically portable, though.

Zone Mortalis has it ruled that template weapons (be they explosive or flamer) count as twin-linked or reroll wounds or something to that effect. I would probably have that for templates used inside the trenches, and blasts where the center didn't land in the trench wouldn't affect those inside.
