OOOH! OOOH! ME! PICK ME!
*ahem*
I've used the Quickshade Strong Tone (specifically on my nids way back when they were Leviathan schemed).
Definitely paint it on, otherwise it really is a disastrous mess. I used a ratty cheap hobby brush (so I could just toss it when I was done).
I didn't thin it at all, which was half the draw (because it's an incredibly resilient protective coat).
I would honestly just leave it as is, no thinner required.
But as for adding something (tints and such), I couldn't tell you. I mix up my own washes anymore for that particular direction. I feel like I've personally outgrown quickshade, just because by the time my paint jobs are done and need a protective coat, they're DONE done. Make sure you use this product in the same manner; as an option rather than a crutch.
I do have an idea for you though. Look up the wash recipes that use Future Floor Polish, and see what you can do with that. Gives the tinting colors you choose, and gives you a protective coating as well.
