I just bought a SW battleforce so before I build them I'd like to know what are the best ways to utilize them. I know they're not competitive but they came in the box so I might as well use them for the first few games until I can get more Greyhunters/wolf guard. I was thinking perhaps as a relatively cheap meltagun delivery system: give one a meltagun, keep the others basic, infiltrate as close to a vehicle as possible, then on turn 1 hopefully be within melta range and pop it.

Get all the plasma weapons in there that you can. I think you can get 3 - 4 in one way or another (you may have to include a Wolf Guard) and stick them in reserves. Now using behind enemy lines and acute senses, you have a great way to show up right on the butt of an annoying tank and take it out. The enemy will have to direct their attention to them or risk loosing one tank a turn. That might give the rest of your army a chance to do what ever you need to do that turn.

for infiltrating if out of LOS models have to be 12 inches away and if in LOS 18 inches so going around sight blocking cover will make it impossible to get within the 6inches for melta effect. Outflanking them or infiltrating them in a good position with bolters and a heavy bolter are great ideas. If you go second you could get within the six but if I was in that position I would blow up the scouts to take out the meltagun

While that sounds good on paper, I have a couple problems with this tactic:

*Cost: I did the math and 5 scouts with 2 Plasma Pistols, one plasma gun, led by a wolf guard with a combi-plasma is 143 points. Thats alot fot what is basically a suicide unit that will get basically one chance to kill something before they are dealt with. for comparison, even two fully loaded out Lone Wolves will not only come out about the same cost or slightly more but with EW, TDA, PFs/THs and Stormshields will be far move survivable and far more of a threat to everything.

*Plasma Weapons are only S7, even against the S10 rear of most vehicles, that means you still need a 4+ to do any damage.

Keep them cheap as a psychological weapon to come on the back board edge and take out a tank or squishy objective holder. Just a min squad with melta which is about 85-ish odd points from memory.

They can mess with people's deployment and movement potentially which is great for such a cheap expendable unit.

Another thread kind of deals with this: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/525982.page#5604571
