I am new to Tau, and I am unsure about how markerlights work. Do targeting a unit with markerlights count as a weapon being fired?

Yes.

You could not fire a Markerlight and a Pulse Carbine, for instance.

ok thanks....also, if I have a squad of 10 pathfinders, I can fire say 5 Pulse Carbine and 5 marker lights?

Yup.

When you have a model (or models) in a unit with more than one ranged weapon, you have to declare which weapon it is that they are using.

You can mix and match this as much as you like.

A markerlight IS a gun, so treat it the same as you would with any gun. It just doesnt cause wounds, directly, unlike other guns tend to.

Its the same as having a bolter and bolt pistol; you choose which you want to fire, on a model by model basis, exactly the same

you don't have to roll to Wound with it, as it cannot cause wounds directly. You still have to roll to see if you Hit.

Is it a good idea if I buy a 10 man pathfinder team and split them up into two 5 man squads, so one squad can put down some markerlights and the other can do some damage?

You could use the 2x5 teams to mark different things and let the rest of your army rip them apart.

Or mark the same enemy if you ABOSLUTELY need to kill it beforehand (MCs, artillery, etc)
