Boosting Ultramarine Biker
|
Hello, I'm working on the codex chapter Ultramarines. I understand that the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th companies are the battle companies. The first six squads are tactical squads, seventh and eight squads are assault squads, and ninth and tenth squads are devastators. Then Sixth and Seventh company are comprised of ten tactical squads, eighth company is comprised of 10 assault squads, ninth company ten devastator squads, and tenth company 10(?) scout squads. And of course 1st company is 10(?) veteran squads, and dreadnoughts.
So with ten squads across ten companies that is about 1,000 space marines.
Of course then there is a captain, chaplain, librarian, company champion and apothecary attached to each company as well. plus anyone else who makes up the command squad.
But what about vehicle crew? are adeptus mechanicus space marines there own thing? what about bike squads, where are these space marines coming from? are they assault squads?

Bikers, Land Speeder Crews, and Assault Squads are all staffed by the same group of people.
The scout company does not have a fixed organization chart, as it never deploys as a unit.
The 1st Company can also get a little wonky.
Techmaries belong to the Armoury.
Vehicle crew is contentious...some old sources say servitors, some other sources say marines from the armoury, others say marines from the battle company.

I was always of the belief that the "marines from the armory" were actually just reserve company marines that serve a stint in the armory and move out of it either when more reserve marines are needed or they're promoted to a battle company. In my opinion, I don't feel there are ever dedicated pilots in a chapter.

Librarians are held centrally in the Librarium and are only attached to forces on a temporary basis. Chaplains also technically have their own organisation but they are permanently assigned to a company. Each company also has a handful of Dreadnoughts, they aren't just in the 1st company.
(Theoretically) every assault marine has a jump pack, a bike and a share of a land speeder, whether he's in a battle company or the 8th company. They are not restricted to assault marines however - the 6th & 7th companies also maintain pools of bikes and speeders respectively which are manned by their tactical squads.

Whoever mans the vehicles is a question akin to the identity of the Lost Primarchs. This will cause huge debate.
As for the bikes and speeders, as part of their training, all Assault Marines learn to use speeders, and get further training in the use of bikes, building upon their training as Scouts.
The 6th Company also holds a full armoury of bikes, and the 7th are ready to deploy in speeders.

Essentially, you get 2 Assault squads per company, x amount of devvys depending on the influx of new recruits, and, obviously, the boundaries on chapter size set by the codex are a guideline.. You could go 500 or 600 marines over and they still wouldn't care, and the Black Templars (according to some sweaty fanboy BT maths) are like, over 5,000 strong, so it's not strictly 1000 marines, and yeah, the scout companies don't have a proper structure, so their could be any number of scouts in there..

The Armory is separate from the company structure. As is the Librarium and Reclusium.
There have been a few threads on this subject and if you count the marines outside the company structure(that must exist) you can come up with a number somewhere between 1200 and 1500 for a full strength chapter.
This includes marines that operate the chapter fleet and vehicles, along with Librarians, Chaplains, command structure, etc...

Do librarians and techmarines wear company colors if not permanently attached to a company?

No, they don't. If any trim is present it's usually Chapter colour, or silver has been used for Techmarines too. As they are not part of the company, they do not wear company colours.

I was under the impression that the armory, Librarium, Apothecarion, Chaplain whatever-it's-called, and command staff meant that a full-strength chapter would come in somewhere between 1050 and 1100 Marines. Additionally, the Scout company tends to have far more flexible numbers than the others due to fluctuations in recruitment success, and the fact that most Chapters are partially deployed at any time means that casualties will occasionally outstrip the number of Scouts qualified to move up. In short, the Chapter of 1000 is an idealized number that's rarely going to exist in actual circumstances.

ok, so this is the organization for your codex chapter, with all librarians, techmarines, tech savvy marines (vehicle drivers and pilots IMO), command personnel (captains, chaplains, apothicaries and standard bearers) I have always seen the rest of the command squads as being taken from the company itself or pulled with the captains as the move around. some vehicles like land speeders and bikes are manned by the company members themselves. then there are outside of this the older marines or heavily disabled marines that are relegated to trainer roles or manning the fleet, so you are honestly looking at 1,200 to 1,500 full brother marines in any single chapter once the support elements are taken into account.

You may use anything I post, just remember to give me credit if used somewhere else. |

That's a pretty good chart. The 1,000 marines in a chapter is sort of a myth. Like most people have said you are almost always over (If you're at full strength) due to various support elements.
