(Hoping this is the right place to post this thread, couldn't find a board that made more sense, please move this to an appropriate board if this isn't it)

Well after being into Warhammer 40k for awhile I've finally decided to get into, but I'm rather lost as to what basic Codex I need to get started for small scale play. The kind of person I am I don't want to just buy a beginner's box, because lets be honest, who wants to start out with a run of the mill army of Ultra Smurfs or barely green "non-kustomized" Ork Boyz?

I want to scratch build my first army myself from bitz and pieces I find, buy or make myself, I'm most interested in starting a Space Wolves Army (non of them sissy backstabbing Dark Angels ) and then later when I feel the urge to get all "supa kustom" an army of very own extra orky kustom Ork Boyz.

The above being said, what Codex do I need to start off?

I know for the Space Wolves I'll need at least the 6th Edition Codex, and probably a few other Codex related to Space Marines, and for the Ork Boyz I'm thinking I need Ere We Go and the 6th Edition Codex for them.

Am I missing anything? A complete list of what I need to get going, including any assorted gubbins I haven't though of (I know dice and rulers are a must) would be greatly appreciated.

All you need to play the game is the 6th Edition Rulebook, and the Codex of the army you wish to play, so if you want Space Wolves you just need Codex: Space Wolves.

Just so you know what they look like. Also the Space Wolf battlebox isn't a bad way to start and get you bitz collection going etc.

And this should be in 40k Discussions. Dakka discussions are not for 40k and fantasy discussions as it says in the title. But a Mod will be a long to move it soon enough, welcome to Dakka and 40k

The only codices you ever need is the codex for the army you are playing, and now with 6th edition, for any army you intend to run as allies.

You don't need anything else other than the 6th edition rulebook. Codices for other armies you don't play are purely for knowledge.

You can get the paper-mini book off ebay for pretty reasonably from people who have broken up the starter set.

You will probably also need a set of templates (small, flamer, pieplate) and a scatter die or two, and a bunch of D6.

Then your chosen codex and you are all set.

Personally I recommend the one with the big angry screaming guy on the cover and lots of skulls.

I forget its name but I'm sure you know the one I mean.

Oh and yes, off to 40k discussions.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!

It's by no means necessary, but most armies will get some added units from one or more Imperial Armour books. I actually can't think of any for Space Wolves, though. It can also be a bit piecemeal, as some units have gotten updates in IA Apocalypse 2nd Edition, and some have not been updated since their original appearance. In fact, what you're probably best off doing for that is getting a copy of Army Builder. It's a very useful tool for playing with army lists and printing them out in legible and easily-referenced format. It also can help you figure out what IA options are available and what books you need to consult for the full rules (Army Builder has full numerical stats for units and weapons, but no longer contains the text of special rules due to legal threats from GW).
