Hi guys,

Just bought my first Tac squad since getting back into gaming and I'm trying not to screw anything up. I watched a painting tutorial the other day and it was demonstrated with the snap fit model. The guy left the bolter and arms off until he'd painted the rest of the model. I have a few questions in general.

How do you paint your marines that aren't snap fit? I'm pretty sure when I was younger I'd assemble the guys in full then paint. Now it's making more sense to me to leave the arms, shoulder pads and bolters off till last.

Also where do you guys stand on transfers? I've juggled the idea of purchasing an "Ultramarine" shoulder pad kit off GW website but I'm reluctant to spend an extra £6 everytime I create a tac squad. So, the transfers any good?

Lastly, what is the general preferred undercoat spray? Black or white?

I know all this must seem really trivial and rookiesh to alot of guys on here but it's been awhile lol

I only leave the gun off personally. But I am still working on improving my painting skills.

Transfers are okay, I would research the tools you need to get the best results. There was some liquid thing to make them bend better, and a good pair of tweezers that give you control.

I always prime black because I like to dry brush and WAHAY free shading.

People who stopped buying GW but wont stop bitching about it are the vegans of warhammer

I'm with Leth on this one.... leaving the weapon off makes life a lot easier. the only other part to consider separately is the backpack, as for arms and shoulder pads I would definitely attach before painting.

I actually prefer transfers as you can be more creative adding numerals etc... before applying, just coat the armour panel in question with gloss and allow to dry, after adding the transfer and allowing that to dry cover liberally with citadel medium - this process disguises the transfer outline. you can then weather if you're that way inclined.

as for priming, black is probably best for ultramarines... pros may use white!
