Well, I bought this today and played it a little bit. I REALLY love the 80s cheese theme, and that's mainly why I bought it. The intro movie had me laughing but good.
But I was sorely disappointed to learn this is a checkpoint-based game, not a quicksave anywhere game like I would have expected from a AAA FPS title. I dunno, does Far Cry 3 do the same thing? To me, this is a dealbreaker.
Ok, queue rant: why do game developers insist upon checkpoint-based games? I HATE this. I mean, I really HATE it. It's wasting my time.
I just want to be able to quicksave anywhere, at any time, quit the game, and do something else, and the resume my gameplay at my leisure. Not get halfway through something, have RL intervene and be forced to abandon all that gameplay and then do it all over again. Not be forced to play around this inane checkpoint save system.
Why, oh why do they do this? It just drives me crazy, and is a primary reason why I won't buy any modern console system, as consoles seem to love checkpoint saves. But on PC, I'd expect more.
Also, the game severely overheated my GPU, to like, 84C +, and I could only play for about 15 minutes before the cooling fan was working so hard it sounded like a vacuum cleaner. Very alarming. Guess my GTX 260 is showing its age.
Other than those issues, the game looks fun and I'd very much like to play more of it. Although it's going to have to be at minimal graphics settings, and FU checkpoint saves!
Ok, so what do you all think of this game?

You're running a 260? I'm pretty sure they're casual GPUs, right? Your problem is really in that. 260s are designed to run stuff like PowerPoint and videos reasonably well. A 2013 game is going to run on it terribly.
I would sincerely consider an upgrade if you want to run newer games.

Manchu, your posts are normally a joy to read but this was simply wrong. Farcry 3 on the PC has a feature similar to quicksave but it only allows you to 'save' your loot and skill tree progression. It still resets you to the last checkpoint or nearest outpost/radio tower etc. So it removes almost none of the frustration. Also although the OP was playing on PC there is no such feature on the 360. There were many missions i felt were ruined by the lack of quicksave, the one where you burn the cannabis fields and Vaas' island base in particular. I spent both fighting near endlessly respawning goons with an assault rifle, it was like Modern warfare but not as fun, all because i wasn't absolutely flawless in my stealth and made one mistake each time.
When i learned, 3/4 through the game, that you could save anywhere in Deus Ex: HR i started enjoying it way more. Stealth games need quicksave, or at least really consistent checkpoints like MGS.

gtx 260 is high mid range gpu even though it's sothing like 7 years old it can run most games reasonably well (bf3, crysis...) but I agree getting a better gpu is a good idea.
You also might check much dust has collected. Also blood dragon apparently isn't as optimized as fc3.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

Seeing as it's no longer possible to buy through standard retail, I would definitely consider an update then. Maybe a 650ti? AMD 7770/7850?

I'd actually wait and shell out for the upcoming 800 cards this fall. When the PS4 and XBox Infinity release later this year, all the development teams are going to start developing with those as a base. Minimum PC requirements are gonna take a jump. Likely, the new base will be either the 800 or 700 series cards and their AMD equivalents (this is speculation assuming that a previous trend in game development will continue).

Yeah I'm pretty much looking at building a new PC sometime this year. The GTX260 has served me quite well and handles most games without any issues, but the more cutting edge games definitely punish this card...

If your motherboard has multible pci slots you might want to considering keeping gtx 260 as a dedicated physx card.

I knew this post was coming, which is why I added the link. The PC does have quicksave but it doesn't work for missions.

I don't understand why people complain about the checkpoints. It's makes way to make the game harder are more tense. Quick saves can basically be used to cheat and take all the tension out of the game. Furthermore, FC3 isn't that RPGey enough to justify quick saves.
Meanwhile, over in XCom: Enemy Unknown there is a much lauded "Iron Man" mode that eliminates quick saves. Leading to comments such as you're not a real man unless you're Iron Man Moding it and so on.
