Does the unit that is using the shield drone get a 4+ invulnerable save?

No, just the drone, so you need to position them carefully, its often useful to use your thrust move from the jetpack to position them ready for the enemies incoming fire

Generally you probably only want to include Shield Drones as protection to an IC in a unit. You put the Shield Drones in base contact with the IC, and then you use look out sir to pass any wounds that the IC wouldn't be able to save against (or that would cause instant death) off onto the Shield Drones...but then against any normal wounds that the IC can get his normal armor save against, you let him just soak those up.

personally I always put shield drones in my crisis teams, for 12pts each I find the extra wound and the 4+ invun helps them soak up alot of firepower before I start losing valuable crisis

Yes.

All of this is spelled out pretty clearly in the Codex. Do you not have one?

This forum is not a replacement for not owning a particular codex, it is meant for discussions about rules that people have access to but are still unclear about.

are you sure that they count towards transport capacity because look on the pathfinder's page (38), if you have a codex....

If you're talking about the Recon Drone, that has a special rule which allows it to not take up transport capacity (since it technically mounts on top of the Devilfish when it embarks, if you look at the pics if the model).

All other drones are fully members of the unit and there is no reason they DON'T take up transport capacity (besides the Recon Drone, of course).

Or you are just giving your opponent easy targets for his bolt guns to force morale checks on your suits. Gun drones are infinitely better now the shield drones don't get the units save and you can't choose which wounds to take on them like in 5th...
