Beautiful Marines, I love the colours and shadows! The Dirty-white helmets are fantastic, and the subtle lava bases look awesome but without stealing any attention from the model. Brilliant work!

I agree, it is used rather often now. But i like it. It makes bright vibrant colours like the livery green on the marines easier (and quicker) to do, and also helps make really deep shadows.

And FatElf, its not a lava base!!! It's Galeforce 9's autumn mix. It's spongey stuff, basically. And meant to represent foliage (leaves/bush etc).

...lava... lol

OHHHHHH. Well, now who feels stupid See, I thought they were Salamanders, so lava was the next step in my mind, but the autumn foliage makes a lot of sense now

They are Sons of Medusa! Surely the white helmets should have given it away?
...I should look up making my own decals and putting the Sons of Medusa emblem on their shoulders so i dont have to specifically say they are not salamanders.
I could do it free ha-
second thoughts, thats a terrible idea, i'd it right up lol

Nice, gritty look. Would look even better with some squad markings!

You're not wrong there, precinctomega. I just cant bring myself to ruin the paintjob. My freehand is worse than an ork's shooting :(

Your paint job is awesome. The dry, dusty look to their armor is killer. I think those blank shoulder cry out for some iconography, though. If you aren't into freehanding, you might want to acquire some Microsol (and Microset, of course) and try some decals. If your chapter is a DiY one, you can always steal someone else's symbol (maybe invert it) or use a decal from another army sheet. Even if you have a symbol in mind that you can't get off of a GW sheet, they sell decal paper you can print on, so you can make your own. Once you get the hang of it, they look really, really good.

I recommend decals, with an application of MicroSol and MicroSet to fit around the curvy shoulder pads. Don't worry about chapter symbols - just get the tactical markings down for now!

@Jimsolo: This chapter isn't a DIY one, its from IA9&10. But neither FW or GW does the Sons of Medusa transfer sheets.

I should look into homemade decals in the near future.

WHats the diference between microsol and microset? I've only ever used water then matt varnish to apply decals.

I think you've done the Sons of Medusa quite well. I think they're an army that looks quite good in an airbrushed scheme.

Microsol and Microset are two different compounds that work together to give you a great effect. First you gloss varnish the area (and let it harden) that the decal is going to go on until it's totally smooth. When applying the decals, dampen the site with the Microsol, apply the decal, and let it dry. Then you can apply a layer of Microset. Each successive layer of Microset will soften the decal further, which serves to both eliminate the edge of the film, as well as form-fit the decal onto any surface irregularities. If you wound up with any air bubbles trapped under the decal, you can puncture them with a pin, and keep applying layers of Microset. Eventually, the decal will be as flat and form-fit as if you had freehanded it on! All the decals in my gallery were applied with this method, if you want to see how it looks. (Note, that my patience is limited, and I tend to give up after two or three passes with the Microset. I know people who are willing to do seven or eight if they have a particularly stubborn decal, and it always winds up lying flat in the end.)

After all is said and done, you can matte varnish over the whole thing to eliminate any glossy look.

Nicely done. Do you paint piece by piece or assemble then paint. I really can't imagine being that clean assembling first but there are some amazing air brush guys out there.

When I get home I'm going to do SO much coke and ---- hot women. It will be like, 'It's 5pm..., time to do some coke and ---- hot women!'

@Adeptartificer: I assemble the marine first, leaving the bolter and helmet off. I airbrush the body and prime the bolter/helmet then I then paint on the details and once the entire thing is done, i glue it together. can you imagine how time consuming it would be to paint white over bright green?

Thanks for your views guys
