I recently picked up The Harbinger and Thyra for $15 together at as swap meet. I also picked up a full choir set as I haven't heard a Menoth player play without them. So now my main question, what models, troops, solos, etc, work for both of these casters. I have a feeling that there isn't going to be a lot of crossover, but I'd rather pick up the ones I can use for both before picking up anything for them individually.

Any help would be helpful (duh?!?)

I would take a look at this website as a general loose outline to see what will go good with the Warcasters you have (although I would kind of recommending picking up Protectorate of Menoth Battle box set or the Two-player if you have a friend that wants to get into it was well since you get both Protectorate and Khador with a good amount of Warjacks and units, and both have a good starting caster for the Two-player one, High Exemplar Kreoss and Kommander Sorsha), Choir is a must, but you need Warjacks in order to really use them at all. I am still kind of new to the game, but I do play Menoth as well.

The single most-used unit in Menoth is the Exemplar Errants with their Unit Attachment (the dudes in heavy armor that have swords and crossbows). Regardless who you're using, you can get a fair amount of mileage out of these guys, although neither Harbinger or Thyra do a great deal for them specifically.

I don't think there's much overlap in a Harbinger/Thyra list. Harby often likes to run with the Avatar of Menoth and some heavies. Going warjack-heavy with Harbinger not only capitalizes on some of her good anti-infantry tech (feat, Fear of God) it also creates a wall of line of sight blocking to protect Harbinger with her large base.

Thyra plays a little more swarmy (she can run jacks, but she sort of relies on being a super solo to get into the fight and assassinate the enemy warnoun). She likes Daughters of the Flame and various other infantry.

If you're looking to fire up Menoth but want to do so cheaply, I'd put Thyra to the side and not pay a whole lot of attention to her for now. Avatar, two Reckoners, and Exemplar Errants is a very effective list with Harbinger, p/eSeverius, p/3Kreoss.

I would 2nd Avatar, Reckoners and Errants for units that work with many casters.

Those are also good options

For infantry, in addition to choir almost every caster will want to run Exemplar Errants w. UA. They provide a good number of bodies as well as both ranged and melee capabilities. Temple Flameguard and Zealots are both widely used, but not to the same degree as Exemplars. As a note, if you do get Flameguard or Zealots, make sure you get the UA for both. They drastically raise the value of both units.

For solos, I would recommend picking up the Vassal of Menoth, It is an amazing utility piece that goes well with nearly every caster. Wracks, Nicia, Heirophants, and the Covenant are both good, but again not nearly as universal.

For 'Jacks, both heavy kits are widely used, so if you can, magnetize them to get the most value. Of the speed 5 chassis, the most popular is the Reckoner, which is arguably the best non-character jack we have. For the speed 4 chassis, the Vanquisher and Crusader are both good choices, the Vanquisher for its gun and strength, and the Crusader for being priced like its sold at Wal-Mart. For lights, repenters are quite a steal, since they bring a fair amount of firepower for 4 points. For Character 'jacks, generally speaking you only want to run them with their Casters. The exception is the Avatar of Menoth. This is because in addition to being quite good, the Avatar generates its own focus, effectively meaning that your caster can run one more jack than (s)he normally could, or run the same numbe but have them do more or cast more spells.

As far as painting I'm still trying to figure out how to handle all that wide open spaces.

Ahhhh too true. Good call and it will give me chance to work on my magnitizing skills, which are unpolished at best.
