How do Dark Angels designate sergeant status if the guy wears a helmet and hasn't been awarded a robe? Do I have no choice but to make my sergeants bare headed/robed? And scouts right pad is just green with squad number yea? Any clues would be appreciated. Anyone got Insignium Astartes? Thanks in advance.

Often the weapons and equipment can be a give away that someone is a sgt, or maybe banner poles, or ornamentation on the backpack like the DV tactical squad sgt's one. Or just make his shoulder pad a bit more ornate, add decals either painted or otherwise to signify it... lots of possibilities.

DA get a whole bunch of crazy bling - perhaps some of that to show his higher status?
>One of the fancy DA vet back packs with the swords etc...
>DA symbols, feathers, censures, books other assorted small bling
>One of the fancy DA vet pauldrons (studded with little DA symbol on the rope, DA symbol on the parchment pauldron)
>Weapon wise use the DA style fat-end power swords etc...
Even without these bits just giving him a tabard/loin cloth can help show he is a sarge.

The DV set brings a Tactical squad and you can spot a mile away who the sarge is:
Besides that, there's always a helmet / gauntlet in a different color just to show who's boss. Or if this isn't an option because it's DA we are talking about, just add that extra ornament to the Sarge's backpack.

I don't think "hasn't been awarded a robe" is a possibility, fluff wise (aren't they given those at birth? :p).
If picking up the Vet box / DA Upgrade sprue isn't an option, you could always paint the shoulder pad differently, base the sergeant differently (an additional layer of cork under the guy, maybe?), boss poles, different backpack, etc.

The hood and robes are about their big secret... they wear the hoods to hide their shame, and dont get told about the full extent of the shame untill they rise through the ranks. Learning more and more of the awful truth the higher you get right up to master of the chapter who holds knowledge that even the rest of the inner circle are not aware.
Im not sure about what level veteran sgt's are at and wether they would be ashamed enough to adorn the hood, the company masters are ceratinly up there, while some veteran sgt's may or may not be. I would expect to be getting a suit of TDA and to join the deathwing or a bike and to join the ravenwing around the same time you find out about the most part of the fallen.

Well the new codex kinda retconned that. Now robes are t awarded to battle brothers who do something awesome (explains random squad members with robes and sells upgrade packs ). That's why I gathered from what I've read. I haven't read it cover to cover though.
The Dark Vengeance sarge is interesting. He has a Black Templars style tabard. It's definitely not a robe. I'm going with bling/tabards and backpack ornaments for non veteran sergeants, and robes for the vets. That should do nicely. Cheers guys!

I think that you can get away with having sargeants without robes who represent "sargeants" in tactical squads, etc.
Robes would be issued to "veteran" sargeants who have been inducted into the deeper mysteries of the chapter (so for the veteran sarge upgrade in tactical squads, veteran squads, etc.).
For the non-robed sargeants, as mentioned, banner backpacks, fancy backpacks, helmet color/stripe, shoulder pad/shoulder icon color are all ways to make him stand out.
In the new codex, I didn't notice any retconn of the robes being a status symbol and reserved for veterans (which doesn't mean I might not have missed it).
